Harlan Future Farmers of America won the small group showmanship trophy at the 1985 Iowa State Fair Worg FFA Breeding Sheep competition. The chapter also ranked among the top five herding chapters. Regional exhibitors from Shelby County, Mike McCall of Harlan and Kevin Brix of Walnut, won grand championship honors in crossbred commercial ewe lamb categories, with McCall earning showman awards and Brix earning reserve status and a showman nod.

1985 Honey Queen Promotes At Iowa State Fair Display
Kelly Duffin, 1985 American Honey Queen, assists promotion of honey and honey products at the Iowa State Fair through Aug. 21. She will sign autographs and hand out recipes at the honey display on the second floor of the agriculture building. Duffin is a University of Wisconsin junior. Iowa counts about 3,500 beekeepers and is served by the Iowa Honey Producers Association.

Group Home in Harlan Becomes Homeowner With Open House
The Harlan Girls Group Home, run by the Christian Home Association, has purchased a two story house at 1605 Ninth St. in Harlan and will host an open house from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday Aug 23. The open house will include tours by residents and staff. The purchase, backed by a Department of Social Services contract, marks a milestone as the home becomes a long term residence for 13 to 18 year old girls in need of assistance.

Iowa Lottery Tickets Go On Sale Across State Thursday
Iowa Lottery officials announced that tickets go on sale Thursday at noon at more than 3,000 retailers including 15 in Shelby County. Provisional licenses issued for 90 days, with permanent licenses after background checks by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation. Prizes include $2, $5, $100, $500, $1,000 and $5,000, plus a possible jackpot exceeding $5 million funded by ticket sales.

Lifeline program preview set for Shelby County meeting
A first of two parts preview for the Lifeline program in Shelby County is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Shelby County State Bank in Harlan. The service allows a single wrist button push to call for help for disabled, elderly, infirmed, or families with SIDS prone infants, with sponsors Shelby County Health Foundation and Myrrle Memorial Hospital. Over 150 leaders received invitations to hear Rand Petersen, L. Joe Lauterbach, and Dorothy Chipman speak, as Bobbie Theisfeld will explain the system and answer questions. A one year Lifeline subscription will be awarded locally, with equipment on display.
