The Irwin-Kirkman School Board will hear a tuition request from Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kruse to send two children to Harlan Community Schools. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Thursday August 20 at IK High School, followed at 8 by a joint session with Manilla school officials.
Avoca's two municipally owned recreation facilities ran deficits in the last year. The pool posted a loss of 10 053 with receipts of 16 440 20 and disbursements of 26 494 12. The golf course posted a deficit of 11 569 93 with receipts of 52 169 79 and disbursements of 63 739 72. Both saw major improvements, including a new restroom, fencing, asphalt work, and a greens mower.
Over fifty Iowans volunteer to coordinate Take Pride in Iowa projects statewide. Governor Branstad launched the yearlong celebration with August as Take Pride in Iowa communities month. Leo Hough of the Harlan Chamber of Commerce will coordinate events in Shelby County.
An open house honoring Dr R E Donlin of Harlan will be held from 4 to 6 30 p m on Aug 26 at the Library Restaurant in Harlan. Donlin recently announced his retirement from medicine and will take a part time role in Clarkson Hospital Public Relations Omaha Nebraska.
Iowa Department of Revenue issued an equalization order Aug 14 1987 that leaves Shelby County Pottawattamie Cass and Crawford counties with no changes in property tax valuations while Harrison County sees a six percent cut in agricultural property. Most classifications saw decreases or no change. agricultural productivity values have fallen since 1985 and residential taxable values remain relatively stable despite lower market values. Hearings on proposed adjustments are set for September.
Harlan firemen hope to host the 1989 Iowa State Firemen's Association convention drawing about 3000 visitors for three days. The decision will come after the Maquoketa vote in September with Des Moines slated for 1989 if approved. The association dates to 1898 and plans its centennial events.
Police seek tips after five car stereo thefts in south and southeast Harlan occurred late Friday night into Saturday. Value exceeds 1500 dollars with items from six vehicles including Alpine and Pioneer units, CB radio gear, and accessories. Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis is urged by Mary Jane Gibson, a longtime Massachusetts legislator, for consideration by Shelby County Democrats at precinct caucuses on February 8, 1988. She praises his character brains record of achievement and electability after noting Massachusetts unemployment fell from 12 percent to 2.5 percent under his leadership.
Ron Rosmann and his wife Maria operate a 320 acre farm northwest of Harlan chosen for an on farm research project by Practical Farmers of Iowa. He eliminates pesticides and cuts fertilizer costs by crop rotation manure and cover crops. A Friday field day will showcase two eight acre test plots and results.
