The St Marys Parish Picnic in Panama runs Saturday and Sunday August 9 and 10 with concessions starting at 4 p.m. Sunday features baseball tournament action from noon, a steak dinner from 4 to 8 p.m., and pony and swing rides. An auction sale begins Saturday at 6 p.m.
Official weather observer Robert W. Sorensen notes 5.59 inches of precipitation in July with measurable rain on eight days. The heaviest totals occurred July 6 at 1.41 inches, July 10 at 1.14 inches, and July 25 at 1.20 inches.
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad will visit the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan on Friday, August 15, at 12:30 p.m. He is expected to meet residents and staff during the scheduled stop.
Jeanne Grudile of 2104 Lincoln Ave is appointed to call on Harlan residents to match their block for the Iowa Chapter Hope Chest Campaign. The drive runs through the latter part of August as 3500 plus Iowans live with Multiple Sclerosis, a central nervous system disease.
Avoca hosts the 11th annual Old-Time Country Music Festival August 29 to September 1 with a Pageant Symphony of Pioneer Folklore and Music funded by the Iowa Development Commission. Stage director Dick Zion says past figures like Cody James Brown Lewis and Clark Lincoln and Ulysses S Grant appear in the historical pageant ending with a real wedding on stage and a candle-light This Land is Your Land. Eight other stages offer musical contests and entertainment on an international scale.
Harlan Community Elementary students score in the 90th to 97th percentile on Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, with grade by grade results showing high national and Iowa standings. School leaders credit teachers, parents, and the school board for sustained excellence and ongoing curriculum shaping.
A Monday night lightning storm caused a northeast Harlan power outage and sparked a barn fire near Westphalia at the Ed Goetzinger farm. Westphalia and Harlan volunteers battled flames for about 30 minutes, with the building and stored hay lost. Utilities reported outages and transformer damage in Harlan. no injuries were noted.
The Evergreen Inn reopens under Sally and Bob Schwery with over 24 years in food and restaurant work. They offer noon and evening specials daily except Sunday and invite readers to see the advertisement in this issue.

Hancock County reports Mount Ayr and Goose Haven acts winning the senior and junior divisions of the Bill Riley Talent Show held Sunday night. Jerry Noble won senior division top prize, while Honey Creek Cloggers topped the juniors. Berths to the Iowa State Fair Talent Show went to both division winners and junior runner up Amie Adkins.
Walnut Community High School ceilings contain asbestos but pose no immediate danger. Superintendent Warren Winterhof said he applied for and was awarded federal funds to remove it. Walnut and Council Bluffs were among eight Iowa districts receiving EPA asbestos removal money. The EPA granted over 2.4 million dollars to Iowa and three other states, with Walnut receiving 79,907 dollars.
The Harlan area posted a slight rise in taxable retail sales for the third quarter ending September 30, 1985, increasing to 10,495,601 from 10,440,267 a year earlier. Irwin and Portsmouth also posted gains while Shelby County overall fell two percent.
