Harlan Community Schools plan a survey of the newly reorganized district to estimate next fall’s public school enrollment. Superintendent Orville Frazier says the mailing to residents will not affect parochial school enrollments and aims to gauge needs for books and supplies.
School ends for summer, yet education continues with drivers education for about 106 students under state law and district reorganization. Three instructors operate three cars while classes run at West Ridge School through July 29. Additional summer offerings include typing at Central School, high school band lessons, FFA activities, farm project inspections, and potential Drake University psychology courses starting June 6 and June 27.
Ground was broken last week for a community financed swimming pool in Elk Horn. Local farmers used earth movers and tractors to clear the site with Harry Christen gen donating a crawler. Excavation follows and pool assembly will start once steel plates arrive. Donations total 22,000 dollars.
Orvis Lambertsen aged 42 of Harlan has taken over the Thrifty Super Saver Grocery Store in Denison. A former car salesman for three years and former Swanson's Store manager in Harlan, he plans to move his family to Denison on June 11. He and his wife Lois have three children, Douglas 18, Chery 13, and Elizabeth 8.
Shelby County Historical Society members will tour county conservation sites with the Soil Conservation Service for two hours on Wednesday evening. They meet at the SCS office on Morningview Drive in Harlan before 7 p.m. Refreshments follow at the SCS office. Call Mrs Neil Knapp or Mrs Arnold R Christensen for rides.
Over 450 4-H members and leaders attended the 4th annual Joint Rally on June 1 as Rebecca Hansen became president and Robert Boetiger was named president of Shelby County girls and boys 4-H. Other officers installed included Becky Lewis Clyde Wissler Emily Ohlinger Keith Schwiese Barbara Lytle Steve Boeck and Peggy Henriksen. Honorary members Mrs Don Gibson and Wilbert Rossmann were welcomed. Cary Christensen spoke on Where is the handle and 4-H ceremony aides included Zita Leinen Kathy Ladd Steve Pike and Patty Henriksen. Retirement officers Caroline McLaughlin Danny Steen Judy Petersen Charles Carroll Mary Agnes Rosmann Robert Smith Glenda Boysen Russell Ahrenholtz Margaret Sullivan Jim Stein. Over 100-percent clubs Fairview Future Farmers Douglas Diaies Jackson Hustlers attended.
Shelby County 4-H Booster Organization launches a six day fundraising drive starting June 6. Committee secretary Lee Sunderland says volunteers will reach out to local business people and residents to raise funds for all 4-H activities in the county with a goal of five dollars. Earl Powers chairs the effort and urges any missed donors to contact their local Booster Committee member.
Mrs Maude Frederickson aged 79 of Harlan died June 4 at Baptist Memorial Home. Elmer C. Pedersen aged 74 of Kirkman died June 1 in Harlan.

Harrison County tops four county districts Harrison Shelby Monona Crawford in applying for Economic Opportunity Act funds via the West Central Development Corporation. The program allocates or seeks hundreds of thousands with Harrison securing blocks for the Beautification Erosion Control and Employment plan known as the BEE. Head Start funding, neighborhood youth, and rural family counseling grants are spread across the four counties, with local in kind contributions noted.
Harlan Jaycees name their first Boss of the Year at a 7 p.m. Tuesday Bosses Night Banquet at the Country Club. Self employed members invite community leaders as guests. letters of recommendation determine the award, judged by a state Jaycee officer. Ray Buman chairs the event. guest speaker is Fal Buesing of Omaha from Haskins & Sells.
An out-of-town golfer struck onto Highway 59 and began swinging his club in the road with cars waiting. A separate note recalls a Harlan resident painting a toilet seat lavender while preparing for an open house, then forgetting the wet paint during a coffee break.
Rev Adam Reisz, pastor of St Boniface in Westphalia, will celebrate 25 years as a Roman Catholic priest with a Mass at 11 a.m. at St Boniface Church and a public open house from 7 to 9 p.m. at the school hall. Concelebrants include Msgr Michael Schwarte and Msgr Peter Schmitz.
