Scouts Take Nature Notes at Devil's Backbone Park

Fatal plane crash ends two lessons in Beaman field
William Evans a 45 year old Beaman farmer and World War II aerial corps veteran was killed when a Travel Air biplane crashed in a plowed field two miles southeast of Beaman during a teaching flight with instructor Karl Lorenzen 25. Lorenzen who was injured died later from head and spine injuries. The crash occurred about 1 16 Saturday after takeoff from Evans farm. The two had planned a ten lesson sequence at a cost of 650 dollars. The plane buried its nose, wheels stuck, and the left propeller blade snapped off. Evans body was taken to Alexander undertaking parlors Conrad. Lorenzen received hospital treatment in Marshalltown. Rev and Mrs Trenkow returned from Nebraska to attend funeral services.
