Iowa Farm Debt Burden Highlights Heavy Mortgage Interest
The Iowa Department of Agriculture estimates farmers pay at least 80 million dollars annually in mortgage interest, a fixed charge that has barely changed despite income. In 1927 interest equaled over 11 percent of gross farm income and more than one third of farm capital is borrowed, with over a billion dollars secured by real estate mortgages. Chattel mortgages and unsecured notes are unrecorded, stressing the region despite solvency and a slow three-year decline in overall debt.
