A majority vote by the class selects Apgar studios in Marshalltown for portrait day. The group will travel to the studio to have their photographs taken on October 9.
Delores Crosser reports on the Aplington versus Wellsburg sectional final tonight, with Aplington likely advancing to district play after a 15-0 loss that ended the fall softball season. The page notes upcoming basketball practice, focusing on running and jumping for conditioning.
The fourth week shows many with perfect attendance: Cheryl Steven Sherry Mary Darlene Daniel Gary and Douglas. Reading groups are Blue birds Robins and Larks with a trip to Eldora last Friday. Eldora Library cards were issued and signed by parents. Librarian Mrs Van Derveer guided the tour and book locations. The group also visited the Fire Station Bowling Alley and courthouse. Deputy Sheriff Mr McCormick narrated the sheriff's office tour.
On Monday afternoon September 24 at 12 30 the third sixth and ninth grades with their teachers traveled to Eldora for a hearing test. Far phones were attached to ears and sounds came through wires. Students answered yes or no on paper if they heard sounds.
In government class last Thursday the seniors planned a field trip to National Field Days near Colfax Iowa. They sought a handshake from President Eisenhower and even sent a telegram to Boone asking Ike to shake hands Friday. The group toured displays, ate lunch, and listened to speeches noting heavier crowds for Ike than Adlai. They thanked Mr Beane and Mr Roehlk for organizing the trip.
The senior class plans mug shots at Apgar Studio Marshalltown after a field day at Conservation City. Students note the heat and chatter about Mamie accessories while a few seniors tour the studio and observe the dark room. Citizens heard from local Democrats at the event.
Al Bell returned from Austria and entertained Steamboat Rock students Tuesday afternoon at 3:00. He showed Austrian costumes, souvenirs, and a movie, describing hats, coats, and short trousers, with prices for beer and coffee in Austria. The program concluded with a travel film praised as authentic and its first Austrian release since the Communist takeover.
A junior set notes a visitor from Jos ten to display class rings. The juniors ordered rings the next day and expect delivery roughly between Thanksgiving and Christmas, hoping they arrive around Thanksgiving.
Natalie Romberg, new Steamboat music teacher, hails from Benton Harbor Michigan where she earned her diploma. She studied at Grinnell College Iowa majoring in organ and music education, played flute, sang in ensembles, and previously taught in Newburg and Mingo. Now in Eldora with husband Serafinn Romberg and daughter Kathy, she expects strong contest effort from the male voices this year.
Freshman class recounts a Friday night gathering starting at 7:30 with chalk the corners and tally-ho games. They returned by 9:00 for lunch and thank Mrs Ed Frerichs for hosting and Mrs Zender for sponsoring the event.
A survey of teenagers and some faculty reveals mixed views on Elvis Presley. Reactions range from calling him stunning and cool to derisive remarks about appearance and singing ability.
