Calves Seen as Best Feed Basis for Small Farmers

Zmoleck says calves can yield more value per dollar with home grown feed, appealing to farmers with large feed stocks but limited capital. Calves demand more care, but rising protein feed prices may let feeders substitute other feeds with similar results. Cattle numbers loom large with 92 million head forecast for 1953, up from 88 million in 1952, signaling higher marketings ahead. Feeder plans for next year assume a $30 top for choice grade steers next summer.
