Radcliffe residents face $10,000 suit over sewer tile case

Hardin County board seeks cross judgment against eight Radcliffe residents individually and as reps of all Radcliffe residents in a drainage district dispute. If liable, board asks $10,000 per defendant and a mandatory injunction to disconnect the tile from the sanitary sewer, forcing Radcliffe to build a sewage system. The Smiths claim property damage from tile use as a sewer, affecting crops and livestock, seeking $16,000.

Eldora Teachers and Band Earn Local Honors

Myrtin Wayne Batling and Charlene Mae Mittelstadt, both teens from nearby towns, are listed among youths in a local news roundup. Eldora Band Boosters elected officers including Mrs Lowell Mossman as president, while the Eldora high school band will perform at the Iowa State College South Dakota State game in Ames for Band Day. Lorraine Diehl received a gold vase at a Davenport contest, and Drake upperclassman George Fagg will assist resident counselors. Orientation begins Sept 18, classes resume Sept 27. A Teacher’s reception drew 200 to 250 people, and a Social Security outreach will occur in Eldora on Sept 21. Two local deaths reported: Mollie Puller and Charles R. Stubbs.

Eldora Post Office Sets 4 30 PM Mail Deadline

Postmaster J R Bahne announced new hours as mail must be at the post office by 4 30 PM, aligning with changes to the M and St L passenger train schedule. Commercial mailers urged to deliver promptly before night departures. The church also reported the car schedule moving earlier on Sundays while closing at 9 30 PM.

Permita Granted by City Council for Multiple Garages

The city council granted permits including a 22 by 22 foot garage at 6th Ave and Washington to E. E. McFarland, a 12 by 20 foot garage on lot 2 block original town to Homer Run sel, a 14 by 26 foot garage on lot 9 block 60 Deen Wehrman, water sewer and hose on jet 2 block 3, and an addition to Leslie Vinton.

Football Contest Deadline Today

The first of 19 Football Depester contests runs to today noon with prizes for predicting 27 game winners listed in last Tuesday's Herald-Ledger. The second contest will appear in next Tuesday's Herald.

Women to Run Eldora Dollar Day on Oct 20

The Business and Professional Women's club and Eldora Chamber of Commerce plan a Dollar Day for October 20 where women manage operations and draft advertising. BPW co chairmen are Manley Stiley Ed Clarey Hubert Cleveland and Ed Anderson. Chamber committee includes Stauffer Greensweig Schmidt Meader and Felton.

Gross and Bogan to Address Eldora Rotary Club

Congressman H R Gross and Gerald Bogan executive secretary of the Town Good Roads Association will be principal speakers at the Eldora Rotary club meeting next Tuesday at noon. Gross will discuss the foreign situation and Bogan will talk about Iowa's road program. This week Dr D M Nyquist and Willis K Bramwell of Eldora showed films and discussed their recent European trip.

Eldora Hospital slips back into red figures in July

Eldora Memorial Hospital reported a July deficit with a secretary’s balance of 2 412 18 after receipts of 6 948 99 and disbursements of 10 285 67. August closed with a positive 2 514 68 balance after restoring prior month overdrafts and receipts totaling 11 096.00, leaving net funds of 10 171 50.

Top Thrift Buck Award at Eldora Hits $150 Midweek

The top Thrift Buck prize of 150 dollars is set for next Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Eldora. Only two awards were given this week and neither was the top prize of 100 dollars. Five dollar awards went to Ruth Arkland in Ben Franklin and Dale Zellman in Brawn's Cleaners.

Treasurer's Report Shows Eighty Thousand Balance

City treasurer's monthly report to the city council Monday night showed a balance of $60,859.37. Beginning balance at the start of August was $78,855. Receipts during the month totaled $1,858.01. Disbursements were $19,853.64.

Community Building Needs Discussed by Eldora Group

A community building committee in Eldora heard reports on similar structures in Rock Rapids and Reinbeck and decided to send questionnaires to representatives of various organizations interested in a community building. Mrs Grace Van Patter was named secretary of the group.

The notice lists 4-H girl and boy leadership trainings and district events. Sept 18 training at Congregational Church from 10:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sept 20-21 District Extension Conference. Iowa Falls Council Fails To Act On Gas Rates

The Iowa Falls city council Monday night failed to take action on proposed natural gas rates from Towa Electric Light and Power Co. Royal M. Brigus, manager of the electric company's office, had no comment after the council's inaction.

Ten Thousand Bass Stock Upper Pine Lake

The State Conservation Commission placed ten thousand large mouth bass in Upper Pine Lake last week. They were raised at Lower Pine Lake and range from four to eight inches. A 10 inch keeping limit applies. Six thousand channel catfish were also released in the Iowa River near the Steamboat Rock dam area.

First Corn Picker Victim In Rock County

Glen Eisentrager of Steamboat Rock became the season's first corn picker victim when a hand was mangled in a corn picker. He was taken to Eldora Memorial hospital. Judge Warvey Uhlenhopp will hold a one day term of court here tomorrow.

Eldora Council Seeks Gas Rate Cut From Iowa Electric

Eldora council and Mayor Janssen pressed Iowa Electric Light and Power for lower gas rates. They proposed cutting the 2 000 to 5 000 and 5 000 to 9 000 cubic feet brackets, with a noon meeting to learn if the company accepts. If approved, a formal resolution would set new rates. otherwise action is uncertain.

Inaugural Highway Post Office Run For Eldora

Eldora will receive twice daily highway post office service starting September 30, with routes between Tama and Albert Lea. The bus will pass Eldora twice daily except Sundays and holidays, and two highway post offices have been established with Eldora served by both. Details on schedules and ceremonies to be announced after timetable reception.

Postmaster outlines proposed highway post office routes

Postmaster Buhne notes today's mail would arrive sooner under a six day week with no Sunday deliveries, while M and St. I trains may continue briefly. A highway post office would operate from Albert Lea through Tama and back, and another route would run from Austin to Des Moines via multiple towns with a 2:55 p.m. departure and 10:25 p.m. arrival.

Eldora Voters to Decide Sale of School Houses

Eldora school district voters will vote Monday at the courthouse from noon to 7 PM on disposing three residences on recently purchased school property. The board seeks authority to sell the homes of W. T. Emmert E. E. Funeral services for 83 year old Edgar Reece of New Providence will be held today at 10 a.m. at Biersborn Funeral Home Union and at 2 p.m. at Honey Creek Friends church. Willig Arrives at Texas Air Base for Flight Training

Lt Eugene J Willig son of Mr and Mrs Carl Willig of Eldora Iowa has arrived at Webb Air Force Base Big Spring Texas to begin flying training. He will study primary at Malden AFB Missouri before advancing to the basic single engine school to learn the T 28 trainer and T 43 jet trainer. Completion will qualify him for USAF silver wings. He is a Ellsworth Junior graduate who joined the Air Force in 1964.

Wood Auction Opens Farm Sale Season Near Iowa Falls

Raymond Wood will hold the first farm sale of the fall season next Thursday at the Hibbner place located four miles south, nearly three miles east and three quarters of a mile north of Iowa Falls. The sale starts at 9:30 a.m. and features 151 head of livestock and a good line of farm machinery.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. Martin EB Pape at St John’s Lutheran church Hubbard for Albert Walters who died Saturday at University hospital Iowa City after a two week illness. Born June 28 1883 in Hardin county he lived all his life near Hubbard. Surviving children include Howard of Junction City Kenneth in Guam with the Navy Mrs Jesse Jacobs Hubbard and Kathryn Saint Lorena Calif with one son Harold dead in World War I. Married 1910 to Mary Markwardt.

Benefit Game Here For Midget Pee Wee Coach

A benefit softball game to aid Bill Shoemaker, longtime volunteer coach for the Midget and Pee-Wee baseball clubs, is set for next Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the local diamond. Shoemaker moves to California in October and the proceeds support his family. the Southside will play Owasa in the fundraiser.
