Largest Eldora HS enrollment tops prior record

Eldora Community School reports a 907 total on opening day with 254 in high school, 507 elementary, 146 junior high. The district welcomes 27 high school students from Qwasa and adds students from Owasa Steamboat Rock and other areas, including 4 in shorthand.

Heart Attack Fatal for Young Hardin Farmer

Walter Lee Eldridge 31 a Hardin County farmer died at home about 6 p m Tuesday from a heart attack. He had finished work for the day and died while preparing dinner. He is survived by his wife and three small children. The Eldridges lived three miles south and two west of Towa Falls.

Herald-Index Tall Corn Contest Seeks Entries

Area corn growers are reminded that entries are still being received in the 1961 Herald-Index Tall Corn Contest. The lone entry so far measures 12 ft 9 in by Gary Neuman of Eldora. Open to Hardin Grundy and Marshall counties, stalks should be brought to the Herald-Index office in Eldora for display. The winner earns a plaque. Last year Roger Sparks of Clemons won with a 15 ft 11 in stalk. Foster plans a free square dance and teen bunny hop tonight and Saturday at Foster's Super Valu Eldora from 8 to 10 pm with cookies coffee and lemonade.

Two Youths Fined On Beer Charges

Des Malines youths Paul Binder and Richard Murphy both 18 were fined $25 and costs in Lee North's Justice of Peace court for procuring beer as minors. Police arrested them Tuesday night in El ore.

Former Whitten Lady Annie Weaver Dead at 90

Mrs Annie Weaver a former Whitten resident died at her Marshalltown home Tuesday at age 90. She lived in Marshalltown 28 years. Funeral today at 2 pm from Avey Funeral Home Marshalltown with burial Benson Cemetery near Whitten. She married Frank Weaver in Whitten June 14 1889. he died in 1930. Survived by son Donald Grundy Center and daughter Mrs O E Ennen Marshalltown plus eight grandchildren twenty three great grandchildren and sister Mrs D O Roll St Ansgar.

Eldora Area Men Win Tractor Pull at Fair

Eldora area contestants fared well at the Franklin County Fair tractor pulling contest in Hampton. Don Schuneman won 6000 pound class on an Oliver 770, W C Zielske topped 8000 pound class on a John Deere 40, Neil Baker placed third on an Oliver 80, and Merle Kramer led the unlimited class over 10,000 pounds with an Oliver 880. Attendees included the Bunger and Kramer families, George Kramer, Donald Schuneman, Zielske, Donald Finger, Nell Saker and sons.

Six Blue Ribbons Win for Hardin County 4-H Clothing

Hardin county 4-H home economics entries at the 1861 Iowa State Fair earned six blue ribbons, six red ribbons and two white. Exhibits in clothing included skirts, blouses, dresses and housecoats from Kay Schnirring, Connie Miller, Nancy Lettow, and others. Local 4-H girls also showcased pie box hats in the Dress Revue and were assisted by Joyce Barton, Judy Tatum, Beth Lettow, and Sharon Harrs, with guidance from Mrs. Edgar Perry.

Mrs Richard Dole Dies At Age 33 In Iowa Falls

Mrs Richard Dole of Iowa Falls died Thursday morning in Iowa Falls Hospital after a lingering illness. She was 33. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 30 a m from St Mark s Catholic Church with burial in Catholic Cemetery. Rosary tonight at the Dole home four miles northeast of Iowa Falls. Survivors include Mr Dole and three daughters Karen 11 Dione 8 and Donna 6.

Perkins Wins New Boat At Eldora Firemen's Dance

Dale Perkins of four miles northwest of Eldora won a new boat and trailer valued at 1500 at the Eldora firemen's dance held Friday night at the Hardin County Youth Building. About 400 attended. 1698 tickets were sold. the fire department expects to clear roughly 350 for a two way radio fund.

Depositions Taken In Folkerts Case In Hardin County

Depositions were taken Thursday in the Folkerts case involving Robert Folkerts of the Hardin County Board of Supervisors and County Engineer Sherman G. Held. The matter is set for hearing before Judge Harvey Uhlenhopp, with Lundy Butler and Wilson representing the board and Held, and James C. Dunbar of Waterloo representing Folkerts who seeks reemployment after being discharged for union membership.

All But Two Of 82 TS Boys Return To School

Thirty of the 32 Training School escapees have been apprehended and are back at the school, according to Sheriff Lowell H. McCormick. One streak of four left Monday, but last report noted 28 had escaped in three days. Two Monday absences were recovered in Boone and one in Fort Dodge.
