Flu Epidemic in Eldora Schools Shows Decline

Eldora schools report a drop in absences from a peak earlier in the week. Supt. Paul J. Simons notes 199 students and four teachers absent Thursday, with 219 on Wednesday and 225 the day before. The high total was Tuesday, 210 on Monday, and the football game Friday night has been canceled due to the epidemic.

Sherff Closes I. F. Dance Hall Near Iowa Falls

The Flamingo Ballroom south of Iowa Falls was shut Tuesday by Hardin township trustees and Sheriff Paul Hodgson after repeated complaints of drinking, fighting, and disorderly conduct. The venue, once the Marcon ballroom, had no license and was warned to remedy issues. five intoxicated teens and others were found leaving as patrols conducted checks. Wayne Johnson of Sac City had purchased and renamed the hall this summer, with Wallace Fessler acting as manager. The county supervisors previously denied a beer license, and trustees will not rush to reissue a license to reopen.

Rites Held For Caster Infant At St Marys El Dora

Services for 18 day old Paul Edward Caster son of Mr and Mrs Roy Caster of Union were held Thursday at St Marys Catholic Church in Eldora. The baby died of pneumonia Monday night. The Casters have a son Roy age four.

Plans Laid For 1957 Christmas Seal Campaign

Hardin County Tuberculosis and Health Association held a full board meeting to lay plans for the 1957 Christmas Seal campaign. Funds from the annual seal sale fund health education research case finding and patient services. Young Farmers To Hear Talk On Hog Raising In Europe And Russia

Dr. G Gould, president of the United Church of Christ Fl dora deacons board, and Homer Runkel, trust es president, announce a change in the church service schedule. From May through November, the 8 am worship will shift to 9 am with a Bible centered series titled The Bible Speaks. Readings on fear, love, hope, authority and tribulation will accompany comments. This marks the seventh year of the early morning service at First Congregational Church of the United Church of Christ.

Hampton man Dean Anderson to speak to Eldora class

Dean Anderson from Hampton, fresh from a national hog farmer tour of Europe, will address the Eldora Young Farm class and local farmers at Eldora Vocational Agriculture building Tuesday night. Burl Lehnus, rotational agriculture instructor, says the meeting starts at 7 pm and is open to all interested. Focus will be on his Europe tour including Russia with emphasis on swine.

The Union-Whitten junior class will stage Three Fingers in the Door at 8 pm Friday in the Union-Whitten gymnasium. The presentation was postponed from October 25 due to unspecified reasons.

Quiet City and Town Elections With Few Contests

In Eldora and nearby towns the November elections appear quiet with few contests. Eldora has nine officials running unopposed for re election. Whitten sees a mayoral race between Leonard D. Flick and incumbent Enos Fouts. Alden, Ackley, Radcliffe, Steamboat Rock, and Iowa Falls show scattered challenger activity, mostly unopposed council bids, while Whitten and Alden add notable mayoral or council races.

Hired girl claims house on Grundy farm in probate case

A district court will hear a case where the General Mission Board of Trustees of the Church of the Brethren seeks to establish tithe on a Grundy county farm and gain possession of the house. Mary Gruss, longtime housekeeper of FP K Albright who died in 1956, asserts the house and grounds belong to her as part pay for 34 years of service and challenges the church’s ownership. She also sues for $30,285 against the Albright estate for nurse and housekeeping work from 1922 to 1956, while noting a life interest granted to the church ten years prior.

Youth elected Hardin county 4-H officers in Eldora

Iowa Falls youth Bert Moore 14 son of Bill and Mrs Moore was elected president at the Hardin county 4-H meeting held Wednesday at the youth building in Eldora. Byram Vigars of Eldora became vice president with Roger Reed from Steamboat Rock chosen secretary and Marvin Grantow of Eldora named historian. Larry Brandt of Hubbard was elected reporter.

Church Surplus Food Program Gets Underway

Wartah Munsinger, superintendent of the Sunday school at Eldora United Church of Christ Congregational, reports the Start of the Share Our Surplus program. Denny Higgason, Denny DeVault and Dave Mitchell lead. One dollar funds 200 pounds of food for overseas relief in the War-line project to aid the needy overseas.

Gordon Eklund of Eldon and Kim Potgeter were announced as new members of the Eldore Rotary Club at Tuesday’s meeting. Rotarians met at the new elementary school for lunch in the cafeteria, then toured several classrooms under Supt. Paul J. Simons.

Mrs Janssen Dies at 73 in Eldora Rites Saturday

Funeral services for Mrs. Henry J. Janssen, 73, of Eldora, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Congregational Church with Rev. Ralph B. Imes officiating. She died October 29 at Eldora Memorial Hospital after a short illness from a liver infection. Pallbearers: Ferguson, Bahne, Carson, Ryan, Edwards, Caffee. Survived by husband Henry J. Janssen, two sons J W Janssen of Hubbard and George E Janssen mayor of Eldora, two daughters Genevieve of Taos New Mexico and Ann J Grittel of Eldora, ten grandchildren and one great grandson, two sisters O J Johnson and Harry Thurber. Bank To Move In After Remodeling Delays

Hubbard bank officials say they expect to move into the newly remodeled Security State Bank building in about a week. The dedication was set for October 31 but flu epidemic and material delays caused postponement. The bank operated from a former H. S. Boeke and Son furniture store during renovations. The Dohrmann and Crandall Construction Co of Eldora handles the remodeling.

Eldora Protest Filed Over Passenger Train Service Cut

Secretary of the Eldora Chamber of Commerce W. P. Schnitting announced a formal protest to the proposed removal of two daily passenger trains through Eldora. A hearing is set for 10 a.m. Nov. 20 at the Franklin County courthouse in Hampton. The Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway seeks ICC approval to discontinue trains seven and eight citing mounting deficits of over 20 thousand dollars last year and an estimated 26 thousand in 1957. The company reports total annual income from mail, freight, and passengers and fears highway post offices could replace mail service. Chamber representatives and interested locals are urged to attend to oppose the cut and protect freight and local service.

X Ray Campaign Chairmen Meet For Free Chest X Rays

County and township chairmen plan a Nov. 5 meeting at the courthouse to organize a countywide free chest x ray program for residents over 18. A mobile unit will travel the county to perform X rays, with community volunteers coordinating locations and outreach.

Annual 4-H Banquet Set For Nov 9

Hardin County will hold its annual 4-H Banquet on November 9 at the county Youth building in Eldora. All members, leaders, parents and friends are invited for awards to outstanding 4-H members and families. Tickets cost 1.95 per person and can be reserved through the local 4-H club leader or the county extension five in Eldora.
