Mr and Mrs Frederick Leonard and daughter Pedgy of Cedar Rapids were weekend guests in Eldora at the home of their son and wife, J. D. Leonard. P J Wetrich of Collins spent Sunday in Eldora visiting his sister and brother in law, Mr and Mrs Howard Calfee.
Manson rallied with nine runs in the final two innings to beat Radcliffe 9 to 7 in the sub state finals. Radcliffe led 7-3 before Manson exploded in the seventh, with Poppen Pierck Miller Hoesing and Poppen keying the late surge as Harlan Kuhfus took the loss for Radcliffe.
In a Monday double bill Manson defeated Roland 11-1 in five innings to advance and Radcliffe beat Geneva 4-2. Radcliffe capitalized on a two-out rally in the first inning with three runs, aided by walks and a fielding error, then added an insurance run in the third. Gary Kuhfus and Carl Teig contributed key hits for Radcliffe in the decisive frame and final tally.
Church and city softball teams must file entry with the local softball association by Friday May 28 to join league play this summer. First games set for June 4. Entry money due on the first night a team plays, per Carl Cordes, head of the local association.
Dr Wayne Vassey head of the State Social Welfare department spoke at the Tuesday Rotary club meeting as a guest of Leo Knight of Steamboat Rack. He represented the University of Iowa and shared insights on welfare programs and policy priorities.
Steve Jessup delivered a bases loaded double in the bottom of the final frame to push Union past Clemons 5-4. Jessup went 3 for 3 with a double and a single while Johnson added two hits and Wescott and Shafer contributed key runs. Clemons’ Gary Everest had two hits in three trips.
Radcliffe and Whitten, cross-county rivals, start the night baseball season with an 8 p.m. game at West Hardin field. Prices drop 10 cents this year to 50 cents for adults, 25 cents for children, and free for under 12.
Fairfax residents share farewell for Mr and Mrs Walter Granner as they move to Eldora. Local gatherings include Agnes Dei Study Club at Harold Shortley home and birthday celebration for Mrs George King. Several families from Des Moines Omaha Hubbard and Steamboat Rock visit, while John Gunn transfers to Ft Jackson.
Mrs Mary Schultz who visited in Hampton since before Mother's Day with her daughter and husband Mr and Mrs Paul Rudisill returned home Saturday. Mrs Jesse Smith left Saturday for Des Moines to live with her daughter Mrs Jayetta Hensley. Buy candy at Davzes at half price sale this weekend.
In district court case 8835 a petition to admit the last will of Charles W. Rumbaugh has been filed and is set for proof hearing May 24 at 10:00 a.m. at Eldora Court House. May 18, 1954. Fred L. Miller, Clerk. Bette Felton, Deputy.
Jim Tull and Don Bekemeier won the weekly blind Bogey Colt competition at Pine Lake Country Club on Tuesday. The winning blind bogey number was 43. Other prize winners included Jack Leonard L. L. Scott and Keith Strother.
Ken Collins, Jerry Balvanz and Ken Brock will represent Eldora at the Class B state track meet this weekend. Collins competes in shot put football throw and discus. Balvanz in high jump. Brock in the mile. Balvant and Butch McCoy of Osage posted top regional marks at Cedar Falls with a 5-93 tie for first.
The second shipment of U. S. government surplus food was received and distributed in Hardin County Tuesday by Robert Longenecker, social welfare director, and FP. C. Van Derveer, soldiers relief secretary. The county program is on a trial basis and officials will decide on its continuation at month’s end.
Graduation at New Providence High School will proceed this morning with eighth graders and seniors receiving diplomas. The annual community picnic will follow the commencement exercises.
A church event Sunday May 23 features a pot-luck at noon and an afternoon program of instrumental and vocal music led by Gilbert Moorman from Knoxville Iowa. A church service is planned for Sunday evening led by Rev. Dewey Lamprecht.
The Town Commerce Commission granted Northern Natural Gas Co. of Omaha a construction permit to expand service to 24 Iowa cities and towns, with hearings planned for extensions to 27 more Iowa communities including Eldora. An official said wartime restrictions eased, enabling satisfactory service and a 71 new communities target this year, 51 in Iowa, as system capacity rose fourfold from wartime levels.
The Eldorian yearbook from Eldorian High School has been selected as one of ten outstanding high school annuals in the United States. The cover, featuring Pine Lake, will be prepared for a sample kit distributed to inter-collegiate press nationwide.
Bangor hosts a two day quarterly gathering at the Bangor Friends church starting Saturday at 9 30 am with a Ministry and Council meeting, a 10 am praise service, Dr Willis Harmon speaking at 11 am, and a noon Bangor Missionary ladies dinner. A Union meeting follows with UN peace speaker William Frazier in the afternoon, and Sunday sees Dr Pak Chui Chau addressing the Young Friends Meeting.
Eldora high school principal Huehn will give the main address at Steamboat Rock Memorial Day services at the cemetery. The event is set for 10 a.m. Monday with residents urged to attend.
New divorce action placed on file in the office of clerk of court Fred Miller. Velma M. Havens sues Robert W. Havens for cruel and inhuman treatment and seeks custody of three minor children. The couple married December 14, 1932, at Hampton.
Reports from Iowa City state Dr J J Shurts of Eldora is improving after being taken to University Hospital Monday. The duration of his stay is not yet determined. Dr D M Nyquist and family, who have been touring Europe with the Bramwells, expect to return around June 1.
The schedule lists 10:00 a.m. Bible School led by Superintendent Mr Harry Luiken and 11:00 a.m. morning worship with choir, sermon Antidote For Anxiety. Evening services at 7:45 p.m. feature music by Evelyn and Eleanor Rose and a message Sustaining Powers. Monday May 24 opens daily vacation Bible school for ages four to 14 through June 4 with weekday sessions, plus 7:45 p.m. Hour of Prayer and Bible Study and 8:45 p.m. Choir Practice.
The First Baptist Church led by Pastor H. C. Short invites families to the Bible class at 10 a.m. with children encouraged to attend. Morning Worship is at 11 a.m. featuring a sermon titled The Believer's Walk. A high school Baccalaureate Service is at 8 p.m. Thursday prayer service follows at 8 p.m.
