Area farmers plant corn for 1963 as Ernest uses a 4 pound per gallon concentrate and 2 40 per acre. Sylvester advises spraying with 4 pound concentrate in 25 gallons water plus 1 pint detergent, on sunny days over 70 degrees for full weed control. Cattle should be kept away for days afterward to avoid poisoning from weeds aggravated by spraying.
The price support loan takeover date for 1962 crop soybeans is extended to July 31. Robert J. Hoffman, chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation County Committee, announced the extension to give producers two more months to redeem loans and market soybeans commercially.
Farmers face grazing prohibition for acreage diverted under the 1963 feed grain program from May 1 to November 1, 1963. In Hardin County, compliance checks should finish by June 20 1963. The program aims to align production by diverting and conserving acreage of corn sorghum and barley to offset income losses.
Harald Van Horn of Iowa State University and Extension Assistant Paul Clayton urge Har din County dairymen to delay turning cattle to pasture until grass is ready. Early grazing can force cows to eat leaves, reducing energy for future growth and slowing pasture recovery. Cattle should receive ample dry forage before switching to pasture.
Iowa State University weed specialist E P Sylvester urges farmers to destroy biennial thistles now while in the rosette stage before they form heads. He notes musk curled tall pasture and bull thistles are vulnerable until May 10 and recommends spraying before then with one quart of weed killer.
