A Kansas City Star reader recalls Kay Griffel, a Chicago mezzo soprano, signed for Kansas City Lyric Opera’s fourth season from Sep 22 to Oct 16 1961 with 20 performances. She had sung at Menuhin Festival in Switzerland, led roles with Chicago Civic Opera, and won a National Teachers of Singing award.

The Eldora Herald reports J S Ross hands office and business to C F Woodward and J R Boylan after decades with the paper. Ross began as a compositor in 1873 and advanced to editor as Eldora’s population doubled. Snyder confined at home but able to drive. Coleman Zieger’s barn struck by lightning, buried, two horses and grain lost. Hall sells dray business to Charles Wilcox.

Lt Maynard A Reid USNR, son of Mr and Mrs Guy Reid of Eldora, awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. A fire of unknown origin destroyed a barn double granary hog house and machine shed at Mrs Ella Hoover's west of Steamboat Rock, the Day Cretan family house saved as flames swept away from it.

Five years ago a Kitchen of Tomorrow plan for the county youth building was confirmed this week. Eldora High School small music groups and soloists earned 15 Division 1 ratings in the state music contest last weekend. C. A. Van Patter of Eldora was named commander of the American Legion third district. Construction of a 16 by 20 addition to the Vee of Voreau Wars post home will start this week.
