Plans for Eldora’s three day centennial celebrate with events and parades hinge on selling official souvenir buttons at $1.00. The button grants Centen nial Club membership, discounts on admissions, and funds the celebration finances. Buttons are sold at local stores and during the event.
Funeral services for Mrs Effie Lenore Citt Reece 88 who died Wednesday in an Eldora nursing home of complications from a broken hip will be held at 1 30 this afternoon at Honey Creek Church. Rev R N Culbertson and Rev Guilford Street will officiate. Interment will be in Honey Creek cemetery. She was born November 25 1866 near New Providence and lived most of her life within two miles of her birthplace. She married J L Reece March 24 1887. he died in 1947. Surviving are a son Russell Reece a daughter Mrs Neal Hammer two grandsons two great-grandchildren and a brother Ralph R Clampitt.
HARLEY A. WALKER currently teaching at Corwith has been hired as high school English and dramatics coach for next year. Drake University graduate, married with one son. William E. Hash of Manson Town will be vocational agriculture instructor. Mrs Harold Hough, a former substitute, will teach kindergarten full time next year.
Wm Luick will leave the Music Box television department this week for a similar post at the Good year store in Webster City. His family plans to move after school ends.
Final plans for a highway safety campaign adopted by the Hardin County Rural Young People's group at their kickoff meeting in the extension office. Members will sell red reflector tape for bumpers, farm tractors, wagons and other highway vehicles. Harry Lown described the tape’s high reflectivity and ease of application. Miss Shirley Fisher said the tape will be available in Eldora starting tomorrow night with a sales booth at the corner of Washington and Edgington where volunteers will apply the tape.
The County Board of Review will meet countywide starting Monday May 4 to review property tax assessments. Taxpayers may file written protests for 1953 assessments with county assessor Walter Guenther. Meetings listed include Eldora Streamboat Rock Ackley Iowa Falls Alden Radcliffe Hubbard Union Eldora with members Orville D. Vigars Henry Stebe and H M Lutz.
A special school election will be held Tuesday May 5 to decide dividing Pleasant No 5 between Eldora and New Providence. Polls in Eldora open noon to 7 pm, New Providence at city hall noon to 7 pm, Pleasant No 5 at Art Knowley residence 1 pm to 3 pm. A majority in all three areas is required to carry.
Mrs Fannie W Emeny a longtime Eldora resident and philanthropist dies at Crosby Minnesota hospital aged 80 after long illness. Final rites set 2 PM Thursday at Andrle and Creps Funeral Home with Rev Robert Holzhammer officiating and Eldora Cemetery interment. Surviving: husband Dr H W Emeny son Gilman Wisner Brainerd Minnesota daughter Lois Bloomquist Hib Minnesota.
Sen Bateson will address Radcliffe PTA in the school auditorium Friday at 8:00 pm discussing the state legislature’s school reorganiza tion bill and other new education laws. Attendees include Radcliffe area district representatives and county board members.
Vincent Lampe an Eldora high school instructor has signed to teach at Roosevelt high school Cedar Rapids next year. He will lead the driver training program with part time math duties and resigns from Eldora March 19. Lampe came to Eldora in 1951 after Iowa State Teachers College and has taught driver training biology and algebra and led the adult driver training course last winter.
Mrs. McMahon 89 died Friday afternoon in Marshalltown at her son C H McMahon’s home after living with him over three years. Funeral 2 p m Monday at Presbyterian Church State Center with burial there. Born June 27 1863 in Sandwich Illinois to J B and Josepha Laynter. Survived by sons C H McMahon Marshalltown and J C McMahon Long Beach Calif, three grandchildren, one great grandchild, and sister Mrs F L Meredith Des Moines. Aunt of J F Hardin Eldora.

Tonight the county board of education holds a public hearing at 7:30 in the Eldora courtroom on objections to merging Clay township rural districts Nos. 1 2 and 5 with Steamboat Rock. Most protests come from Clay No. 2 voters in a petition with 268 signers filed in March seeking the independent Steamboat Rock district. If Albers’ ruling stands a special election to decide the issue may be set soon.
Four people received minor injuries when William Sharpshair Jr. turned into the Les Pieters driveway east of town and was struck by a car driven by Donald Hornung Hubbard en route to Waterloo. Hornung was not hurt but his car suffered extensive damage. Sharpshair and the others were treated and released from Eldora Hospital.
The Union Sunday Schools plan a gathering at Pleasant Chapel Church near Eldora on Sunday May 3 starting at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Dewey Lamprecht will deliver the morning message followed by a noon dinner. At 1:15 p.m. Rev. Avery Wetzig will speak and Rev. E. E. Peters will also present. A Bible quiz led by Georgene Wolfe and a display of old Bibles will accompany the event.
Jerry A. Howard now at Keesler Air Force Base Biloxi Mississippi has graduated from the Radar School of Fundamentals and will receive further training while remaining at Keesler. He informed his wife by phone. Mrs. Howard stays with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Martin in Whitten. A second item notes Marvin N. It also mentions Pie Jack Walton and Mrs. Walton returning Sunday from Fort Sill, Oklahoma to spend a week’s leave with Jack’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Glen Walton in New Providence.
Pvt. Walter Dreier of Camp Gordon Georgia is spending a two weeks leave at the William H Dreier home in Hubbard.
Parents of high school juniors and seniors met at the school to finish plans for the all night prom party on May 9. Lampe led the meeting with junior committee heads outlining duties for breakfast, square dance, movie, banquet, decorations, and correspondence. Senior mothers plan breakfast prep and service. junior mothers handle breakfast and refreshments at the country club.
New Providence firemen were called to the James McKenzie home last Sunday evening around 7:00 to extinguish a fire that threatened the residence. The family was away and the blaze likely started by an oil heater explosion, causing substantial smoke damage to the house and contents. Fire crews also responded to grass fires at Quakerdale and the Wayne Humphrey residence last Thursday.
Whitten students earned two first ratings at the Iowa City music finals held last weekend. Patricia Howard received a Division I rating for treble high vocal solo, while the trombone quartet Timmy Yantis Gretchen en Ouden Roger Waugh Larry Arnold also earned Division I top marks with Mrs. Chris DenOuden as accompanist.
Murl Schumacher was elected to membership in the Eldora Rotary club last week and attended his first meeting Tuesday. He operates Schumacher grocery.
Herb Plambeck Farm Service Director will speak at Owasa school gym May 5 at 6 00 pm. He will discuss his South America trip with slides. Families in Hardin and nearby counties are invited to attend an exhibit on this year’s extension lesson. The event is sponsored by Hardin County Rural Women replacing Rural Women’s Day. A coffee hour ends the evening.
Many Eldora women are desirous of borrowing costumes suitable for centennial wear. Anyone having such apparel is asked to contact Mrs. Hubert Cleveland, Elora, costume chairman.
The inaugural Kangaroo Court is set for tomorrow night at 8 05 on the courthouse square. Fifteen offenders are invited including men with no beards and those with unsuitable facial hair, while two prominent businessmen face charges for keeping shops open during court.
