Faculty May Accept Or Reject Board Proposal

Blue Line officials report the new South Hardin County telephone listening service drew a favorable initial response in Eldora Steamboat Rock New Providence Hubbard Union and Whitten. The service runs Friday to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, staffed by 18 volunteers with a professional panel for expert help.

Eldora Legion to display 38 star flag at events

The 38 star flag from Walter Sayer Post No 182 of Eldora will be shown at the Legion Birthday dinner on Monday March 15 and at the awards night on Wednesday March 17 in the Eldora Legion clubroom. Vice Commander Henry Abbas Jr will speak at the birthday dinner starting at 6 30 p.m. and pins for 45 and 50 years will be awarded at 8 p.m. The flag was made in Philadelphia in 1876 and presented to the post in 1947 by Parker S Davis.

New Whitten Cafe Cripps Corner Opens for Business

Whitten welcomes Cripps Corner a new station cafe opened by Mr and Mrs Gerald Bud Crifsom who purchased the business earlier and now operate the cafe in town.

County Farm Considered as Possible Landfill Site

Hardin County Solid Waste Disposal Committee met in Eldora to discuss using the county farm northwest of Eldora as a county wide landfill site. The group moved to become a legal entity with state AG office support, and the Board of Supervisors were asked to work with the county attorney on a formal resolution. Bates reported a trip by committee members to inspect a Boone county landfill.

Liscomb Woman Ends Range Riding Career for Sale

Mary Peterson, 65, of Liscomb known as Top Hand, will stop riding to monitor a herd of purebred Herefords with husband Harold as they prepare to sell at the Marshalltown sale barn on Monday, March 15. Since moving to the farm in 1942, she has ridden daily across 1900 acres, crossing the Iowa River to retrieve calves and breaking many colts, recalling horse highs from Des Moines fairs and early triumphs with Nickel Plate and All American Walk Trot Horse.

State Conservation Officials Meet Pine Lake Leaders Friday

Iowa Conservation Commission representatives in Des Moines will join Pine Lake Improvement Committee members in Eldora Friday March 12 to plan Pine Lake State Park golden anniversary events. They will inspect parking at the park and coordinate statewide publicity ahead of the May 23 observance, a joint effort with local and state groups and extensions services.

Pork Producers set meeting with five directors to be elected

Hardin County Pork Producers will hold its annual meeting Monday March 15 in Eldora with about 500 attendees. Officers and five directors will be elected from nominees including Ben Harrs Etna Gordon Rabe Ellis Foster Mason Hardin Fred Fuller Jackson and Arnold Krueger Grant. Mason Balvanz Hadley Rabe and Cleveland holdover directors. The program includes the 1971 pork queen contest pie baking contest auction and service awards with Tonettes of Ackley performing.

Union Legion Post Sets 52nd Birthday Dinner

American Legion Post No. 955 at Union will sponsor a 52nd birthday dinner at the South Hardin Recreation Center at 7 p.m. on Thursday March 18. A guest speaker will be featured after the covered dish meal, and all members are encouraged to attend. The Union post will also host the Hardin County meeting at the South Hardin Recreation Center on Thursday March 25.

Fire damages gray farm house roof in Eldora blaze

Eldora firefighters were summoned to the Robert Gray farm southeast of Eldora around 6 10 p m Tuesday where the roof of the house was on fire. Firemen contained the blaze before extensive damage occurred. Chief Orville Lamb cited chimney sparks as the fire source.

619 Hardin Farms In Feed Grain Program To Date

The first week total of Hardin county farms in the 1971 feed grain signup is 619, similar to last year. ASC chairman Carrol White notes a March 5 procedure change allows producers to appeal conserving base until Friday, April 9, with appeals in writing to the county ASC committee. Reductions in livestock or shifting to dry lot feeding justify base acre reductions.

Hardin County History Reports Presented at March Meeting

At the Hardin County Historical Society march meeting two reports were given. Gerald Dreier from Hubbard summarized Point Pleasant once county seat of Hardin County with 300 residents. Wilson Hadley from New Providence detailed the Old Settlers organization which existed from 1884 to 1957 before dissolving.

Additional Snow Began Thursday Eldora Diary Entry

Eldora residents awoke to more snow on Thursday with nine inches left on the ground. Weatherman Carl Orgel reports temperatures ranged from a high of 98 degrees Wednesday to a low near 7 degrees Monday, with 24 degrees Tuesday and 32 degrees Wednesday.
