Editor notes two day Field Days lineup with events today from 1 P M to 3 30 P M including field demonstrations cooking school a fashion show and speeches by Ezra Taft Benson and Estes Kefauver plus a noon hour broadcast and a fire fighting demonstration.
Eldora’s Sue Brown, the town’s lone entrant in the State Junior girls tournament at Ottumwa, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Jeanne Richey of Villisca after a 7 and 6 loss. Brown reached quarters by defeating Ann Leahy 3 and 1, qualified for the championship flight with a 99, including 60 on the opening round and 49 on the back nine, as sixteen players advanced.
The Chamber of Commerce offers end of month banners at a nominal fee. Merchants may call the Chamber office to obtain the banners. The large banners are designed for window display.
The Hardin county fair grounds host a state Milking Shorthorn picnic and show on July 7 with judging starting at 10 am. All ages may enter and prizes go to junior entries only.
Barbers in Hardin county approved higher prices for haircuts and shaves. Haircuts rise from 1 to 1.25 dollars and shaves from 0 to 1 dollar, with all other rates unchanged. The new prices took effect Wednesday in Iowa Falls where local barbers had charged 1.25 for haircuts for over a year. a proposed county-wide move to 1.50 was rejected.
A limited offer invites new subscribers to receive 39 issues of the Herald-Index for 1.00. The two day sale ends tomorrow June 23. Coupons and mailed postal cards announce the deal. submit $1.00 with coupon or card at the Herald-Index office.
June has been a record month for the county clerk of court Fred Miller as 23 marriage licenses were issued by June 20, well above the usual 10 to 12. The latest licensees include Donald Luiken and Jeannine Knight both 21 from Steamboat Rock, Ronald Doyle 22 of Williams, Evelyn Hoversten 18 of Alden, Gorden Curyeller 22 of Aplington, and Carol Neuenfeldt 23 of Iowa Falls.
Twenty eight prizes were awarded as 188 young anglers attended the annual WVFW Kid's Fishing Derby at Pine Lake Park. Fishermen from Eldora and Hubbard won top honors with David Graves first to catch, Carol Forbes youngest and most fish by a girl, Duane Clark most for a boy, and 2 year old Denny Ankrum and Kent Pickering sharing youngest fisherman. Kurtz of Charlotte WV won farthest to fish while Jim Sperger Buckeye earned the sportsmanship award.
Radcliffe voters Monday approved a $60,000 bond issue for a school bus barn construction and a room remodel in the present high school building. With 144 voters, 88 favored and 4 opposed. The district has optioned land west of Our Saviours Lutheran church for the new bus barn and extra playground space, while the current bus barn will be remodeled into a music room.
Jim Foster, chief instructor for Red Cross learn to swim at Pine Lake, released a week long schedule. Morning sessions run 8:30 from Steamboat Rock Owasa Radcliffe Garden City Hubbard Union New Providence Whitten Eldora groups. Evening 9:30 and 10:30 slots available with beginner and advanced sets. Re enrollment urged for returning swimmers with free instruction for a second year.
Mrs Gus Carlson 49 of Concord Galif sister of August and Jurn Freriehs Eldora was killed in an automobile accident Tuesday en route to visit relatives. A tire blew out on the Carlson car in Idaho and she died at once. Her husband was in serious condition in hospital. Mrs Carlson would have turned 50 Wednesday. Services were held in Concord.
The hospital and town notices list births and names in Eldora and nearby towns. Entries include Mrs Augusta Daleske Mrs Grace Smith and several others, along with a steam boat reference and births for Eldora Mrs Howard Marcs a girl born June 20 and Town Falls Mrs Jack Bowman a boy born June 19.
Keith J. Stinson 81 of Franklin County was sentenced on two counts of a federal indictment for conspiracy with traveling lecturer George B. Dewey in fraudulently secured bonds. Judge Henry Graven placed him on four years probation in Cedar Rapids after two concurrent four year prison terms were suspended. Stinson expressed intent to appeal and described a troubled life and resolve to reform.
Eldora drew a record crowd as Corpbell Farms Fanmilly Field Days opened at the county fairgrounds and adjacent farmland. Officials expected 40,000 to 50,000 attendees with today’s visit by Senator Estes Kefauver and Secretary Ezra Taft Benson likely boosting totals. Traffic flowed in from early morning with planes using the Eldora airstrip. parking was organized in special lots. By noon, more than 25,000 had arrived, and exhibits numbered about 140 across the fairgrounds. Demonstrations spanned the Koeneman farm now run by Ben Juchems, with irrigation shown east of the Iowa River. A tractor trolley system carried visitors between demonstrations, run by FAF A and 4-H youths. A large first aid station, staffed by four nurses and eight trained workers, operated on site, with Hoe’s Funeral Home providing the ambulance. The housing committee reported 832 rooms reserved.
Dunn campaign receipts show Hubbard business people contributing 88 toward attorney William Dunn who won the Republican county attorney nomination in June. Dunn reported total expenses of 176.21 with 25.97 for stationery 42 for stamps 15 for public address rental to D and R television and 93.24 for advertising. Julia Mulford county recorder candidate reported expenditures 21.50 with no receipts.
The proposal allows saving the minimum five acres or 10 percent of the farm corn base, whichever is larger, and filling the rest of the reduction with land put into the conservation reserve. Plan four offers two payment rates with higher for corn acreage reserve land and lower for the conservation reserve, avoiding tying up all cut for three years and permitting some non corn acreage in the reduction.
Funeral services for Mrs. John K. Moore 32 wife of Rev. John K. Thomas Maine, officer at the school and Red Cross life saving and water safety instructor, leads 15 training school boys through the course. The program emphasizes lifesaving skills and water safety practices for youths.
Incumbent Eldora school board members were re-elected in a single race to fill the short term. Jurgen Tiaden and Harold Wehrman won with 190 and 234 votes while Lew Throssel drew 55. Other results include Mrs. E. J. Clary 278 votes, Carroll Hobson 275, William Vigors 288, Keith Strother re-elected treasurer with 281, and single votes for Bramwell and Griffel. Total 311 votes.
The two day Corn Belt Farm Family Field Days are in progress at the Hardin county fairgrounds with the Wal lace s Farmer and WHO Radio tents as sponsors. Lee Thompson Wallaces' Farmer manager editor Jack Johnson of Freeman Decorating Co Des Moines and Bob Luce were among those making final preparations Wednesday.
U S Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson and Senator Estes Kefauver plan noon arrivals in Eldora to speak at Cornbelt Farm Family Field Days. Benson will speak at 1 PM and Kefauver at 2 PM on the east side of Eldora High School football field.
