Who Lost Their Fish Pole Water Rescue Call False Alarm

Sheriff Paul Hodgson’s new water rescue unit responded to a dry river call at the old El Dora dam site on Tuesday night. Gene Modlin reported fishing gear and footprints leading into the Iowa River, but no body was found after nearly two hours of searching.

Mrs Chas Moser Buried Thursday in Eldora

Mrs Charles Moser 85 died Monday after a heart attack at home. Funeral at Andrle and Creps Funeral Home Thursday at 4 p.m. Eldora cemetery burial. Rev John Moore officiated with organist Mrs J D Leonard. Survived by daughters Mrs Yort of Greenville SC and Mrs Weeks of Cleveland OH, a brother Earl Brooks, a sister Mrs H T Wood, and three grandchildren.

Milk House Destroyed by Fire Near New Providence

A milk house on Marion Rains farm two miles south and west of New Providence burned Wednesday morning around 9 o clock. Considerable equipment was lost. The New Providence fire department responded. Rains, who sells whole milk, is using a cooler at Bernard Reece’s place during repairs.

Nettie L Cobb 78 Dies at Mt Union

Mrs Nettie L Cobb of Union died at her daughter Verne Owens home in Mt Union from a heart attack. Her body was taken to Biersborn Funeral Home in Union. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Union Community Church with burial in Eldora cemetery.

Union-Whitten Case Appealed in District Court

An appeal was filed Tuesday challenging the State Superintendent of Public Instruction ruling on the Union-Whitten school district reorganization. Lundy-Butler and Lundy filed the appeal. the first district court term this fall will hear the matter. The state ruled that land from Liberty Consolidated School District in Marshall County cannot be included, as Iowa law requires districts to have at least 16 sections. The state board also said the joint board of Grundy, Marshall and Hardin counties acted illegally and must vacate.

Eldora School Board Sets Bond at 410000 for New Elementary

Eldora Community School district board sets a 410000 bond issue to fund a new elementary school over 20 years. Petitions to call an election likely start today requiring 83 signatures, with a vote planned for late August or early September. The board pursues a city block for the site, with several property options and current funds and plans from Des Moines architects.

Junior High Bible Camp Opens Saturday

The Junior High Bible Camp of Iowa Congregational churches opens at Quaker Heights Pine Lake this Sunday and runs to July 31. Fifty youths have registered. Dean is Rev Preston Hinderks Iowa Falls. Faculty includes Mrs Hinderks registrar and Rev Gordon Blunt Stuart Rev Bill Sherman Belmond Rev Lee Parcell Clarion and Rev Ralph B Imes Eldora as instructors. Two daily class periods cover eight subjects with four focused on the Bible plus evenings of astronomy hiking stunt night and world friendship.

Captain Stonebrook to Join Father in Dentistry Here

Captain Thomas E. Stonebrook and his family arrived in New York City after two years with the Army Air Force dental corps in Weisbaden Germany. After discharge he will return to Eldora to join his father Dr H W Stonebrook in the practice of dentistry here. He is expected by the end of July and is a graduate of the State University of Iowa School of Dentistry and Eldora High School.

Mr and Mrs Elmer Carter of Hubbard open Carter's Food Market in a new building four blocks south of the city hall this Saturday. The store marks the couple's first local grocery venture and aims to serve Hubbard residents with a ready supply of daily needs.

Farm Bureau Buys Hi Way Cafe For New Office

The Farm Bureau Service Company has purchased the Hi Way Cafe on east Edgington avenue from Hugo Fox with possession Sept 1. The building will house the new office, adding to the Northwestern Railroad depot as headquarters. Previously the company owned adjacent property bought in Dec 1953 and used the structure as a warehouse. Mrs Kenneth Cakerlce had operated the cafe.

Four new teachers have been signed by the Eladora schools to complete the faculty for the new school year. A new secretary Leone Crandall has been engaged to replace Mrs Jim Watts who is moving to Armstrong with her husband. Mrs Crandall is a 1954 E. H. S. graduate. City-Wide Eldora Committee to Discuss Projects

A city wide committee of 24 local organizations meets Monday Aug 2 at the Eldora American Legion Club Rooms at 7 30 p m to discuss proposals for a community building or civic center and a municipal swimming pool in Eldora. The Legion urged prioritizing a school bond and noted a pool could be a bond backed municipal project, with three delegates from each group.

Rotary Votes $100 For Dam on Iowa River

Eldora Rotary club voted to contribute $100 to the river dam fund. C. O. Rubow reports $3,612 raised so far and several local groups plan donations for dam reconstruction. Pine Lake Wildlife club will consider further assistance. Work hoped to start in August when water is typically low.

Free Rides For Kiddies Planned At County Fair

Hardin County board and town reps met at Pine Lake Cafe to outline Kids Day at the fair set for Wednesday August 18. Aug 17 to 20 are fair dates with free rides tickets distributed by civic groups for youth under 12 admitted free at the gate. Tickets priced at five dollars per 100 for merchants to distribute. The midway will be provided by Greater Dixiland Exposition with varied rides and entertainment.

Services Held For Hadley Infant In Indianola

Providence Graveside rites were held at Honey Creek cemetery Monday at 4 pm for the infant son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Hadley former Indianola residents now living in Indianola. The child born Friday July 16 at Des Moines Methodist hospital died Sunday. Eldora votes to keep the 1955 tax levy at about four mills after balancing hospital and Public Safety requests with cuts in other areas. A hearing on August 2 will review the proposal. the budget totals 66,250 in taxes, up from 54,300.
