Hardin County Plaza Dedicated to Pioneers

The plaque dedicating Hardin County Plaza to our pioneers is on the north side of the planter pool facing Edgington Ave. Finishing touches in the local courtyard will wrap in a couple weeks. A Cyprus wood telephone booth arrives to be installed on the northwest corner this week. Eight new modern waste containers arrive next week and two more steel benches are set for placement on the west side. Maintenance and steering committee meetings are planned to set a date for the formal dedication.

Eldora Legion Post names new commander and officers

Don Mathews of Eldora was elected commander of Wal ter Sayer Post No. 182 of the American Legion Eldora. Other officers elected include Martin Kasischke first vice commander Oldig Bunger second vice commander Dale Peshia chaplain Clarence Cockerham finance officer Glenn Hinders historian Gene K Foster service officer Jerry Goetzinger sergeant at arms Clarence Lange sergeant at arms. Installation set for Wednesday July 21 at the Legion clubrooms to be conducted by Bill Scallion third district vice commander of Ackley. Also highlighted are Boys State participants from early June.

Patgeter to Instruct Eldora Transition Class 1971-72

Mrs James A Patgeter of Steamboat Rock has been hired by the Eldora Community School Board to lead a new transition room at the elementary school for the 1971 72 term. Kindergarten students not yet ready for first grade join the class from the 1970 71 junior kindergarten and the 1971 72 kindergarten cohort. A 15 student limit applies. The program offers a full day of classes with transition in the morning and regular kindergarten in the afternoon.

Two-Car Crash Near Whitten Yields Charges

At an intersection one mile west of Whitten a Friday 8 p m crash on a county gravel road and a blacktop road led to charges for Diane Nehring 17 of Union who failed to yield right of way. She pulled out in front of Roger Tompkins 18 also of Union driving west. Damages were about 4000 to each vehicle, a 1965 Cadillac and a 1965 Oldsmobile. The Harie County Sheriff's Office reported the incident.

Eldora to discuss low rent housing project July 26

Eldora City Council will hold a special meeting July 26 at City Hall to consider a resolution to proceed with a low rent housing initiative. If approved, the Low Rent Housing Agency of Eldora chaired by Rev. Paul Lyster will study locations and plan elderly and low income dwelling units in the city before any construction begins.

Organize Art Fair August 20

Interested persons are attempting to organize an all day art fair tentatively set for Friday August 20 at Hardin County Pioneer Plaza Eldora. Not a competition the event will feature local and area attractions and works may be offered for sale by artists. Dave Mclean Eldora coordinates the show for more information.

Jaycees Hire Joe Decker For Eldora Little League Dedication

Eldora prepares for a Jaycee Little League ceremony with Chicago Cubs pitcher Joe Decker slated to speak and throw out the first ball. Event includes ribbon cutting, a pony raffle, and a Cubs versus Dodgers exhibition game among park dedication activities.

Explosion Cause Given in Pieters Farm House Blast

Fire Marshals Harold Schurtz of Mason City and Robert Leber of Charles City state the explosion that severely burned Lee Pieters near Steamboat Rock was caused by sewer gas buildup. The vacant farmhouse had an unvented cesspool and overflowing pipe after rains, creating explosive atmospheric conditions when Pieters lit a match during a storm.

Superintendents Head Co Fair Departments

Department superintendents head activities at the Hardin County Centennial Fair scheduled August 26 at the fairgrounds in Eldora. William Moore leads barns and stalls with Gordon Reisinger for ponies. George Grantow and Stanley Granner head beef cattle while Moore and Marion Jones run dairy cattle, swine heads by Fred Fuller and Carl Lettow. Wayne Fisher and Forrest Huston lead sheep, John Graham handles grains fruits and vegetables, Howard Clingerman and Mrs Dean Eggleston flower exhibits, Mrs W G Tietz and Mrs Curtis Daggs oversee art exhibits, Mrs Paul Cross and Mrs Arnie Grulch textile exhibits, Mrs Harold Lloyd and Mrs James Shea culinary exhibits.

Postpone Queen Contest at Steamboat Rock Fireworks

Steam boat Rock Community Club postponed the queen contest and fireworks for Steamboat Rock to Saturday night July 10 at Rise baseball park due to bad weather. Senator James A. Potgeter will announce the winner around 9 p.m. contestants Arlys Eckhoff Carla Bleeker Becky Heard Carolyn Gast and Mary Folkerts are voting at local businesses. The winner will represent Steamboat Rock at the Hardin County Centennial Fair Queen contest and then at the Iowa State Fair Queen competition.

Grundy Center Man Killed in Fourth Hardin Fatally

Deonis Duane Roberts 21 of Grundy Center died in a one car crash west of Eldora early Monday July 5 during the Independence Day holiday weekend. The eastbound vehicle left Highway 175 about a quarter mile west of New Providence corner and struck trees in a ditch after Roberts apparently fell asleep. Sheriff Lowell McCormick and Deputy Bob Calloway investigated the fatal single vehicle wreck.

Windy storm damages farms near Union with downed power

Severe winds up to 80 mph struck near Union causing widespread damage. Buildings on multiple farms including Daisy Long and Larry McCloud were destroyed or collapsed while trees fell and cornfields lay flat. Electricity was out across the area until mid morning with lines twisted in Marshalltown Whitten Liscomb and surrounding towns.

Hardin Youths Join NYC Job Experience Program

Forty six Hardin County youths take part in the Neighborhood Youth Corps summer work training. The program, funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and managed by Mid-Town Community Action, runs ten weeks with sites at local schools, libraries, health and recreation centers, and city offices.

Tom Neofotist of Eldora daughter and son of Mr and Mrs Phil Neofotist hospital update after injuries from a car pedestrian crash Thursday night in Grinnell. He is listed in satisfactory condition after surgery at University Hospital in Iowa City. He suffered eight broken ribs a crushed right shoulder a broken pelvis a punctured lung and a fractured skull. He was walking along an unlit rural roadway toward his grandparents home when struck by an approaching automobile.

Ordination of Rev Paul Mann at Ames Campus Baptist Church

Steamboat Rock native Rev Paul Mann was ordained at Campus Baptist Church in Ames on Thursday June 24. A graduate of Steamboat Rock High School, he earned degrees from Creanworth College and Faith Baptist Bible College and is a member of Delta Epsilon Chi. He serves as pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Iowa Falls and previously worked as Minister of Christian Education at Campus Baptist in Ames. He and his wife and daughter Janna reside in Town Falls.
