Blood Drive Urges Early Return of Signed Pledges

Marks urges South Hardin donors to return signed pledges early for the Woodmobile visit on July 14. He and volunteers plan direct contact with Eldora businesses and nearby towns to meet a quota of 264 pledges plus at least 50 standby donors.

Union Faculty Complete For Coming Year

Union consolidated school completes faculty appointments for the coming year adding three new teachers. Mrs. Albert R. Johnson becomes home economics instructor, Raymond Dunn of Gilmore City teaches industrial arts and agriculture, and Miss Marlene Meyers will direct band and vocal music. Superintendent Wesley Baddeley begins his second year and Ray Kragel serves as principal and athletic coach. Other faculty members are:

Iowa Falls Woman Attacked By Dog

Mrs. Frank King, 73, of Iowa Falls, suffered lacerations and shock after two dogs attacked her near her home last Friday evening. One dog knocked her down and the second joined in. She required no stitches but was taken to Ellsworth Hospital for treatment. Both dogs were ordered tied and observed for 10 days.

Fourth of July Traffic Toll May Set Record

State safety officials warned drivers about a potential rise in fatalities and injuries during the holiday weekend. Last year seven people died and 215 were injured in 457 accidents, the worst July Fourth toll on record, prompting advice to check vehicles, start trips early, drive patiently, obey laws, and limit speeds to 55 mph at night and avoid drinking.

Hardin County Society for Crippled Children and Adults held its annual meeting at Radcliffe. Officers were re-elected. Simons Named Eldora School Superintendent July 1

Paul J. Simons assumed Eldora school superintendency succeeding Fred K. Schmidt who resigned in March after 1933 service. Simons, from Stuart since 1942, faces consolidation and crowding in Eldora schools and must fill three faculty vacancies. He holds Yankton College BA and an education masters, with further study at Michigan and Colorado. He and his family moved to Eldora last Saturday to the H L Kusserow residence. they have one son and three daughters.

Eldora Steam Boat Road Gets Graded This Week

A two mile stretch of the trunk road between Eldora and Steam Boat Rock is being graded this week with several trees removed. The center will be raised and graveled later to improve drainage. the road last graded in 1920.

Agronomy Field Day At ILS CG Next Tuesday

Small grain varieties crop rotations and fertilizer experiments will be featured at the summer State College Agronomy Farm at Ames. The half day program begins at 1 p.m. July 7 with tours of the farm showing oats barley flax and winter wheat, plus crop rotation plots on corn oats soybeans and clover. The farm lies about 3 miles south of Ames.

Eldora Businesses Shut Saturday for 4th of July Observance

Most Eldora business places will be closed all day Saturday in observance of the Fourth of July holiday. Stores will remain open to night, and the Cash Nite awards, a regular Saturday night feature, will be given at 8:00 o'clock tonight. The post office, county courthouse, Hardin County Savings Bank and state liquor store will also be closed Saturday.

Linda Hadley Named Delegate to State 4-H Camp

Linda Hadley of Union has been chosen to attend the 15th annual State 4-H Conservation camp near Boone. She joins delegates from 85 counties to inaugurate the new state camping center when sessions begin July 14. Hadley, active in 4-H for six years, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Bruce Hadley and a member of the Union Peppy Pals Club. The camp, run by the extension service with an $800 grant from Federal Cartridge Corp, will be directed by Iowa State College staff and county extension workers, featuring field trips, hikes, lectures, and discussions. Naturalist Badger Clark of Custer, South Dakota, also returns for the 1953 session.

Hope View Bessie Aspirant a registered HolsteinFriesian cow owned by Roy N Finster Eldora finished a 365 day production test in the official Herd Improvement Registry. The cow was milked twice daily and began testing at age 9 years 11 months producing about 18 quarts of milk daily with 574 pounds of butterfat and 14427 pounds of milk testing 4 0 percent.

Only Solution To Storage Problem Confronting Iowa

Dewey Eller of Hardin county PMA says Iowa can solve storage by farmers resealing 1952 corn stored under price support loans. If 42 million bushels are resealed, remaining 170 million can be housed in government bins and commercial elevators. Resealing funds help pay for cribs and bins, with farm storage facility loans available at four percent interest to be repaid in four annual installments.

Home Economist Trainee Here in Hardin County

Miss Jean Brenner of Stilwell Kansas will begin field training as county extension home economist in Hardin County this summer under Mrs Jacqueline D Macy. She recently attended the American Home Economics Association convention in Kansas City June 22 to 26 as an official delegate. After graduating from Northwestern University Evanston Illinois next June she plans to enter extension work and will remain in Eldora until September 7.
