Alden's girls reached the Pine Lake conference finals with a 56-50 semifinal win over Union. Steamboat Rock faces Hubbard in the feminine semi while Alden meets Owasa and Radcliffe faces Steamboat Rock in the male semis. Shirley Beecher scored 37 for Union. Evelyn Grape led Alden with 25.
Owasa edges New Providence 45 43 as Hubbard girls nearly pull off upset. Hubbard pivot Donna Hanson leads with 35 points, Carma Aschkart and Jane Ward also contribute. Radcliffe dominates South Hardin 63 38 behind Olin Sampson and Carl Harestad. Crowds, local notes, and tourney antics color the weeklong event.
Evelyn Grape and Marilyn Ellingson lead Alden with 27 points each as they defeat Whitten 59 37. Jovlyn Baker of Whitten shuts in 17 in the second half after a scoreless first half, while Joyce Koch adds 12 and Helen Reisting 8. Hubbard’s squad drops to 0-1 season with Alden 40-37 in the follow up. Loren Larson scores 15 as Don Larson adds nine for Alden.
Eldora's Tigerettes mauled Albion 66-36 behind Mary Beach's 29 points, with Pat MeNerthey and Tom Crosley adding 12 each. In the nightcap Traer led 15-11 after one, but Eldora's Jim Hubbard sparked a late comeback before falling 51-46. Hubbard scored 15 as Balvanich, Cellins, and Harrington added eight apiece for Eldora.
Eldora's Tigers travel to LaPorte City for a conference game tonight and the Tigerettes head to Clutter. Tomorrow the Tigers trek to Grundy Center for a postponed ICL clash with the Spartans.
Merna Westcott starred as the COE Beecher team faced the Union backcourt duo. Kept hero in a pocket under defense as Speas contributed 11 points and Peg Bogue added key baskets in a noon game.

Hardin County Farm Bureau meeting at the Town Falls Christian church drew over 1800 attendees as captains and crews received work kits to contact every farmer and landowner. A January 21 check-up at Eldora’s IOOF hall will mark next steps, with talks stressing that farmer power grows only with organization. The piece also lists new addresses of service members and local Scout and choir activities.
At the annual meeting in Iowa Falls Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of Hardin and Franklin counties reported a record year. Secretary manager R R Van Patter cited over two million more in force, totaling three million dollars, with about 3400 policies active. Losses were not excessive and the annual assessment remains among the lowest for farm mutuals in the state. Additional protection for policyholders has recently been added.
