Eldora to host district speech contest this Saturday
Eldora will host the district speech contest this Saturday with 258 contestants from 15 area schools. Participating schools include Aplington Beaman-Conrad Dike Eldora Grundy Center Hubbard Hudson New Hartford New Providence Parkersburg Radcliffe Reinbeck Steamboat Rock Union-Whitten and Weissburg. Local entrants list 21 from Eldora and 39 from Steamboat Rock with 22 from Hubbard 18 from New Providence and 11 from Union-Whitten. Division I winners advance to the state contest in Mason City on March 18.

Pork Queen Contest Seeks More Entries March 1 Deadline
Mrs. Gordon Rabe of Iowa Falls announced this week that more candidates are being sought for the 1972 Pork Queen title. Entries must be 16 to 19 as of January 1, reside on a swine producing farm or be daughter of pork producers, and be judged on poise personality and knowledge of the industry.

Pre-Retirement Series Begins In Eldora
Donald L Bowman of Drake University in Des Moines will speak at Eldora’s first of seven weekly sessions of the Pre-Retirement Planning Center series. Eldora corn and soybean contest winners honored at banquet
1971 Eldora Master Corn and Soybean Growers awards were presented at Blanche and Ethel's Tea Room. ISU extension speaker Jim Dunphy discussed soybean research while top corn honors went to Ron Klemme and LeRoy Aswegan for yields of 164.89 and 161.69 bushels per acre respectively. Soybean winners included Edwin Palmer first with 54.97 bu/acre and Raymond Klemme fourth. several place winners were absent. The event was sponsored by the Eldora Chamber of Commerce and Town Crop Improvement Association.

Grant Cost Of Living Increase For City Crew
El Dora City Council eyed a 5.5 percent cost of living pay rise for city workers including police. A salary committee proposed increases to bring salaries closer to the guideline with specific raises for clerks, department staff, and police officers. Police court judge Marion Athas also gained a monthly boost. A public hearing on related matters was rescheduled for March 20 at City Hall.

Hardin County Rural Electric Cooperative will award two high school juniors an all expense paid trip to Washington D C for the Rural Electric Youth Tour next summer. Buckeye will host the Harding County Democratic presidential and statutory conventions on Saturday Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. in the Buckeye Community Hall. County delegates will choose district convention delegates by candidate interest and draft resolutions for the national and state platforms. Carroll J. Hobson of Eldora, Soil Conservation District and Iowa Cedar Conservancy District representative, joined a five day Washington event in February with 2,000 delegates from 60 states plus Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Discussions covered national soil conservation policy and agricultural issues. Iowa enforces the only Conservancy Law enacted last year, dividing the state into six districts along watershed lines. The Iowa Cedar Conservancy District spans 2 ½ counties and includes the watershed areas of the Iowa and Cedar rivers.
