Walter E. Riordan, Hubbard attorney, is reappointed as fund raising chairman for the local cancer fund campaign in Mason City. The move positions Riordan to lead donor outreach and organize community fundraising efforts through the upcoming drive.
Frank B. McTigue state campaign chairman of the Iowa division of the American Cancer Society announced a Hardin County cancer control program. Riordan, reappointed campaign chairman, led last year’s drive to 132 percent of quota and highlighted the division’s April gains and future expansion. Swallum of Radcliffe is chapter chairman heading the year-round cancer education and service program.
Steamboat Rock tops Hardin county in the drive to fund the International Christian University chapel in Tokyo with a $100 raise chaired by Miss Clelia Finster. Eldora reports $775 toward a $1,000 local quota while other towns donate $25 at a Youth Rally and a Woman's Club. Hideo Tokoro, Ames Japanese student, urged support for Christianity and democracy. The drive spreads to Whitten, Hubbard, Union, Iowa Falls, Alden and Ackley with no reports yet.

Hardin County group for young married couples gathers at Hubbard town hall on Saturday February 17 at 7 30 p m for a panel discussion on The Young Farm Family and the National Emergency plus entertainment and refreshments. Committee includes Dean Barrett Williams Schnormeier Meyer and Svendson couples.
Eldora Chamber of Commerce retail trade panel reviews six ideas including two underway Pancake day on February 17 chaired by Lauren Maltby and Dollar Days February 16 and 17 chaired by Robert Meader. New items include a trade survey spring opening style show and a farmers banquet and free auction.
The Rev. Warren Feller of Towa Falls will speak at the Methodist church for the first Lenten service on Feb 11 at 7 30 pm. The topic is The Divine Christ and the Methodist choir will provide special music.
Louise Gingles a high school English teacher at Iowa Falls will present a short talk with colored slides from her European trip at the Eldora adult evening school closing next Wednesday at 8 pm in the Gymnasium. The public is invited. She traveled by bicycle and climbed mountains during her tour. The night includes band selections, a sewing class fashion show, ceramics and industrial arts displays, and a 7 pm Rotarian dinner in the school cafeteria hosted by farmers class members and Rotarians.
Noa Reece and Co. of near Lawn Hill filed their annual hunting report at the county auditor’s office on Monday. They collected a 57.50 bounty for 19 fox and one wolf killed in the past two months in New Providence, Hubbard, Radcliffe and Buckeye areas. Reece plans to discard the fox pelts and give the wolf hide to a rug maker.
A load of 96 uneven weight hogs marketed in Chicago by Hick Folkerts sold as one lot for a near top of 21.50 per cwt. The group averaged 540 pounds gain for 5.6 pounds per head after feed and rest. Arrival weight 21,780 pounds and sales weight 22,320 pounds. Last Wednesday Folkerts sold another load to Albert H. Kruse.
Steamboat Rockettes defeated Hansell 91 to 89 in overtime in a high scoring girls game. Ruth Kruse scored 32 and Marj Daleske led Steamboat with 35 points, as Catherine Kolthoff added 24. Hansell’s Alberta Van Dyke was held scoreless in the final period and overtime.
A World Day of Prayer program led by Mrs. Paul Miller will be held at the Methodist church at two o'clock this Friday. Women from the Congregational church will cooperate. An order of service used worldwide will be followed. Mrs. D. W. Dickinson will sing solo with Mrs. Wayne Aurand accompanying. Mrs. Milo Myers will direct a dramatic number.
Judge Sherwood A. Clock of Hampton opens the district court term with six criminal sentences and four divorce decrees. Arthur H. Geerdes, 40, Wellsburg, fined 300 dollars for drunk driving. license suspended 60 days. Cases include Des Moines youths Massey Jackson, 17, and George Daniels, 17, with terms at Anamosa reformatory and training school. Union teens Donald Fairchild and Donald Cobb receive six month jail terms with parole to Rev. Harris. Other pleas include Henry Powers pleading guilty to drunken driving. jailbreak charge against Lowell Squires dismissed.
A jury trial is scheduled next week in the district court for the auto accident damage case of Ernestine Wiechman of Hubbard versus George Dubberke. Wiechman seeks 33009 with 23000 for permanent injuries to herself and 10000 for injuries to her daughter Karla from a Sherman Township collision on November 22, 1947 due to alleged negligence.
A public meeting in Eldora on Wednesday February 21 at 8 p m will feature Mason Regert Iowa State College horticulturist discussing garden planning and varieties. The talk will include tips on growing some of the less common garden vegetables.
Members of the Hardin County Educational Council met in the high school auditorium last night. Rural school pupils performed musical numbers and readings, the Match of Time movie The Tight for Better Schools was screened, and reports were given by county delegates Ruth Schuck, Willard Riekena, and Kermith Huehn. Refreshments were served by rural teachers.
Hardin county courthouse will be closed Monday in observance of Lincoln's birthday. Hardin County Savings Bank also will not be open for business but the post office will operate as usual.
A special meeting of officers of the South Hardin chapter of the American Red Cross will be held here tonight at 7:30 in the county school superintendent's office.
Saddle Club announces the regular February meeting at the Wildlife club house Tuesday evening to view Frontier days pictures by a visiting open date. Refreshments will be served. The committee includes Irvin Schallen and Messrs. and Mesdames Jesse Wright Dwight Heltibridle Rufus Hoelscher and Harry Heltibridle.
Eldora forms Blue Star Mothers of America unit with 10 members enrolled at Mrs. W. R. Foster home. Theo Schan named acting secretary. Next meeting set for Tuesday at 1 30 p m in library club rooms to elect officers and admit more members. charter members include those enrolled this month. About 15 more prospective members show interest. Open to mothers of service members since Korean conflict and to World War II mothers with eligibility back to December 7 1941.
Eldora's contribution to the county polio fund drive rose to about $1450, reported by local chairman George Janssen. Most containers remain to be counted, with an estimated $50 more likely. The 1951 local total exceeds the $1417 raised in 1950 by Hardin county's Infantile Paralysis chapter, via iron lung containers, Community Chest shares, school collections, and individual gifts.
Herbert Humeston, 19, of Union, appears among Des Moines area army enlistees this week. Cpl. Lester Carlin reports he is back on duty in Korea after neck wound and hospitalization in Japan. Carlin’s address: 37419923, EUSA K, 21st T. Car. Co. APO 301, San Francisco.
Reporting for orders at Marshalltown on Monday, Gene Zip Willig of Eldora, an air corps enlistee, was informed he will not be called until February 25.
William Carl Rainsbarger aged 20 of Eldora and Phylis Jean Rada baugh aged 18 of Williams obtained a marriage license. The filing records show both individuals as the applicants with no prior marriages listed.
Eldora volunteer fire department asks the public not to phone Central to ask the fire location when the siren sounds. They note operators alert property owners and that phone lines should stay open for emergencies. Glen I Carson of Central Iowa Telephone says wait ten minutes after the alarm before calling to avoid overload.

A basketball game at Steamboat Rock schoolhouse on Wednesday Feb 14 at 7 30 p m between the American Legion and the Auxiliary. Girls will play by ladies rules and proceeds go to the March of Dimes.
El dora city council approved street plate orders from Henry Geerdes of Wellsburg for Ferro Enameling Co. signs. 90 double signs and 55 singles will cost 845 dollars plus extra for mounting hardware. house numbers totaling about 800 units will cost final price to be set. A plan to have civic groups sell numbers to fund signs was discussed. Stop and go traffic lights were approved for the bank and Diamond Bros. corners, not yet purchased.
Crosley Farm Store hosts an open house from 1 30 to 5 p m on Saturday marking Mike & Ike Day and Crosley’s 21st anniversary. Free smoked turkey sandwiches and coffee, gifts for all visitors, and a Mike and Ike pig weight guessing contest with prizes including bonds for adults and a child’s bond.
Eldora firefighters staged demonstrations of a new resuscitator at the Tull and Probasco hardware store and the schoolhouse drawing about 350 spectators. Sam Long of Ames failed to arrive because of weather. local men Guy Reed Floyd Hurtt and William Luick led the sessions, with praise for school cooperation. The device will be shown in the hardware store window for the rest of the week.
