Riordan Named Fund Campaign Director in Mason City

Walter E. Riordan, Hubbard attorney, is reappointed as fund raising chairman for the local cancer fund campaign in Mason City. The move positions Riordan to lead donor outreach and organize community fundraising efforts through the upcoming drive.

Cancer control drive organized in Hardin County Iowa

Frank B. McTigue state campaign chairman of the Iowa division of the American Cancer Society announced a Hardin County cancer control program. Riordan, reappointed campaign chairman, led last year’s drive to 132 percent of quota and highlighted the division’s April gains and future expansion. Swallum of Radcliffe is chapter chairman heading the year-round cancer education and service program.

Steamboat Leads Hardin County Chapel Fund Drive

Steamboat Rock tops Hardin county in the drive to fund the International Christian University chapel in Tokyo with a $100 raise chaired by Miss Clelia Finster. Eldora reports $775 toward a $1,000 local quota while other towns donate $25 at a Youth Rally and a Woman's Club. Hideo Tokoro, Ames Japanese student, urged support for Christianity and democracy. The drive spreads to Whitten, Hubbard, Union, Iowa Falls, Alden and Ackley with no reports yet.

Talk European Trip Slides On Night School Program

Louise Gingles a high school English teacher at Iowa Falls will present a short talk with colored slides from her European trip at the Eldora adult evening school closing next Wednesday at 8 pm in the Gymnasium. The public is invited. She traveled by bicycle and climbed mountains during her tour. The night includes band selections, a sewing class fashion show, ceramics and industrial arts displays, and a 7 pm Rotarian dinner in the school cafeteria hosted by farmers class members and Rotarians.

Reece Reports Fox and Wolf Bounties Ahead of Ringneck Season

Noa Reece and Co. of near Lawn Hill filed their annual hunting report at the county auditor’s office on Monday. They collected a 57.50 bounty for 19 fox and one wolf killed in the past two months in New Providence, Hubbard, Radcliffe and Buckeye areas. Reece plans to discard the fox pelts and give the wolf hide to a rug maker.

Hogs Near Top in Chicago Market

A load of 96 uneven weight hogs marketed in Chicago by Hick Folkerts sold as one lot for a near top of 21.50 per cwt. The group averaged 540 pounds gain for 5.6 pounds per head after feed and rest. Arrival weight 21,780 pounds and sales weight 22,320 pounds. Last Wednesday Folkerts sold another load to Albert H. Kruse.

Steamboat Rockets Tie Scoring Record In overtime win

Steamboat Rockettes defeated Hansell 91 to 89 in overtime in a high scoring girls game. Ruth Kruse scored 32 and Marj Daleske led Steamboat with 35 points, as Catherine Kolthoff added 24. Hansell’s Alberta Van Dyke was held scoreless in the final period and overtime.

Prayer Day Service This Afternoon at Methodist Church

A World Day of Prayer program led by Mrs. Paul Miller will be held at the Methodist church at two o'clock this Friday. Women from the Congregational church will cooperate. Judge Clock Sentences Six, Grants Four Divorces as Court Term Opens

Judge Sherwood A. Clock of Hampton opens the district court term with six criminal sentences and four divorce decrees. Arthur H. Geerdes, 40, Wellsburg, fined 300 dollars for drunk driving. license suspended 60 days. Cases include Des Moines youths Massey Jackson, 17, and George Daniels, 17, with terms at Anamosa reformatory and training school. Union teens Donald Fairchild and Donald Cobb receive six month jail terms with parole to Rev. Harris. Other pleas include Henry Powers pleading guilty to drunken driving. jailbreak charge against Lowell Squires dismissed.

Crash Damage Suit Set For Trial In District Court

A jury trial is scheduled next week in the district court for the auto accident damage case of Ernestine Wiechman of Hubbard versus George Dubberke. Wiechman seeks 33009 with 23000 for permanent injuries to herself and 10000 for injuries to her daughter Karla from a Sherman Township collision on November 22, 1947 due to alleged negligence.

Gardening Meeting in Eldora February 21

A public meeting in Eldora on Wednesday February 21 at 8 p m will feature Mason Regert Iowa State College horticulturist discussing garden planning and varieties. The talk will include tips on growing some of the less common garden vegetables.

Education Council Holds Meeting at Local High School

Members of the Hardin County Educational Council met in the high school auditorium last night. Rural school pupils performed musical numbers and readings, the Match of Time movie The Tight for Better Schools was screened, and reports were given by county delegates Ruth Schuck, Willard Riekena, and Kermith Huehn. Refreshments were served by rural teachers.

Hardin county courthouse will be closed Monday in observance of Lincoln's birthday. Hardin County Savings Bank also will not be open for business but the post office will operate as usual.

Eldora forms Blue Star Mothers of America unit with 10 members enrolled at Mrs. W. R. Foster home. Theo Schan named acting secretary. Next meeting set for Tuesday at 1 30 p m in library club rooms to elect officers and admit more members. charter members include those enrolled this month. About 15 more prospective members show interest. Open to mothers of service members since Korean conflict and to World War II mothers with eligibility back to December 7 1941.

Eldora Polio Drive Funds Reach About 1450

Eldora's contribution to the county polio fund drive rose to about $1450, reported by local chairman George Janssen. Most containers remain to be counted, with an estimated $50 more likely. The 1951 local total exceeds the $1417 raised in 1950 by Hardin county's Infantile Paralysis chapter, via iron lung containers, Community Chest shares, school collections, and individual gifts.

Eldora volunteer fire department asks the public not to phone Central to ask the fire location when the siren sounds. They note operators alert property owners and that phone lines should stay open for emergencies. Firemen Demonstrate New Resuscitator in Eldora

Eldora firefighters staged demonstrations of a new resuscitator at the Tull and Probasco hardware store and the schoolhouse drawing about 350 spectators. Sam Long of Ames failed to arrive because of weather. local men Guy Reed Floyd Hurtt and William Luick led the sessions, with praise for school cooperation. The device will be shown in the hardware store window for the rest of the week.
