Hudspeth Family Farewell Dinner Ahead of Move

Mr and Mrs Henry Hudspeth and children Alan Elaine and Daphne of Steamboat Rock were honored at a Roughwoods Community Hall farewell Monday night with cards games and a bountiful supper. Hosts included Mr and Mrs Vince Platts Mr and Mrs Charles Snider and Mr and Mrs Fred Doering. The Hudspeths have lived in the neighborhood seven years and plan to move to a farm west of Union.

Supervisors And Engineer Inspect Hardin County Roads

Hardin County board of supervisors and the county engineer toured roads in Hardin County on Tuesday as part of a 1957 improvement program. They visited Garner and Forest City to inspect county maintenance buildings and discussed plans for a spring maintenance building funded by $50,000 already on hand with no bond issue or tax increase.

P. L. Wildlife Club Free Shrubbery Packages

The Pine Lake Wildlife Club offers free Wildlife Packets to Hardin county farmers. Ten packets with trees shrubs vines and berries will be provided, with club members aiding planting. Packets available through Conservation Park and Pheasant Committee or club secretary C. O. Rubow. delivery in early spring.

Bids Sought for 220000 T S Dormitory at Eldora

Superintendent H L Miles announces bids soon for a 220000 Iowa State Training School duplex at Eldora to house 90 boys in two 45-boy sections. The 80 by 104 foot brick building sits north of the gym, replacing an old cottage. Two apartments on each floor flank the dorms with a recreation room and locker facility. meals will be delivered from the main kitchen to cottages.

District Court To Hear Nineteen Cases This Term

District court convenes Monday morning at the county courthouse in Eldora with Judge Harvey Uhlenhopp presiding. Nineteen new cases appear on the docket including six divorce actions such as Seaton vs Seaton Hanson vs Hanson Schimmele vs Schimmele Speicher vs Speicher Doering vs Doering Whisler vs Whisler. Other docket items include judgments and injunctions among local entities such as Wood Auto Co. and Farmers Union Co op Seed Service. There are three state cases listed.

Rev. Carlyle Scott, an evangelist of 25 years with over 9 000 sermons, leads nightly services at 7 30 p m at the First Baptist Church in Eldora through Feb 10 except Saturdays.

Eldora Man Shoots Self In Barn Incident

Louis Teske, 45, of Eldora, shot himself in the cheek with a .410 shotgun in a barn. He walked home, received first aid, and was hospitalized in good condition. He is married with three children.

The 14th annual city cribbage tournament sponsored by the Eldora newspapers opens entries at Rubew & Willcox barber shop with a February 8 deadline. Matches are best three of five, with finals best five of seven, trophies awarded to champion and runner-up, defending champion Co. W. Cote of Eldora.

Mr and Mrs J R Bahne of Eldora attended funeral services for Mrs Otto G Lehman 81 in Sibley Ia Thursday. Mrs Lehman also survived by one other sister Mrs Harlow A Clark of Marquette Mich Word of Mrs Lehman's death was received here Tuesday.

Mary Ellen Mairs Named Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow

Mary Ellen Mairs of Eldora was named the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow at an Eldora High School assembly. Sandra Schwebke presented the award. Mairs achieved the highest homemaking exam score and will have her paper entered in state and runner-up competitions. She will receive a Trifari pin for the achievement.

Hardin County farmers may apply for government cost sharing under ACP for approved conservation work this year. Dewey E. Eller says ACP covers acreage reserve land with grazing and harvesting restrictions. Funds available. Hardin county ACP to address soil bank practices and rate differences. 1956 ACP yielded 80,000 across 691 farms.

Fire destroys hog house on Wesley Barnhart farm

A hog house and its 10 sows and 67 pigs burned at the Wesley Barnhart farm five miles west of Owasa near Highway 65 at about 9 45 p m Tuesday. Fire believed caused by heat lamps. Owasa fire department responded. No damage estimate available.

Yorkshire Sale Set for Cedar Rapids Show and Auction

The Iowa Yorkshire Breeders Association will hold its state show and sale in Cedar Rapids at Hawkeye Downs on Tuesday Feb 5. Forty top Yorkshire gifts slated for February and March farrowings plus ten fall bears from eighty member herds will be exhibited at 10 a.m. Vendors will judge champions and set selling order for the 1 p.m. sale. Judge Uhlenhopp urges Iowa court system reorganization

Judge Harvey Uhlenhopp of Hampton spoke to 105 Hubbard Chamber of Commerce members and guests at its annual banquet January 23. He urged major changes in Iowa’s judicial structure, citing all weather roads, more population centers, and the need for independent courts. Hubbard officials approved pursuing school swimming classes supervised by Hubbard schools.

Eldora Parking Meter Collections Rise Then Dip in 1956

City clerk Jurgen Tjaden reports Eldora parking meters collected 5962.50 in the last year, down from 6519.00 in 1955. Fines and meter revenue fund upkeep, pay bonds, and finance new meters. A southwest 12th Street lot cost 5000 and will be funded by meter revenue.

Jackson Township Homemakers Meet

The Jackson township Homemakers met at the Berlin church parlors with sixteen members present. They planned sewing classes on February 11, 18 and 25, and spent the afternoon making copper planters under Janice Granner. Hostesses Lois Gunn and Florence Northrup served lunch. The next meeting will be February 19 in the Berlin church parlors with Beverly Rudolph giving a family recreation lesson.

Court Allows Foreclosure Appeal in Grace Miller Case

Foreclosure decree against Grace Potter Miller of Ackley in a Dewey fraud case prompts an appeal to the State Supreme Court. The court found Dewey and Stinson acted independently of the plaintiff, which paid $80,000. Miller and guardians failed to prove fraud, setting the stage for further legal action.

One Hundred Eldora Firms Join Chamber. $5300 Raised

One hundred Eldora business houses joined the Chamber of Commerce for 1957 and have paid dues totaling $5,300, $2,000 short of the $7,400 goal. The twelve member committee posted progress after contacting 71 percent of members, noting increases over 1956. A final check-up is planned next Wednesday night.

Civic group forms secretary committee to hire full-time secretary

On Wednesday evening the board named a committee to take steps to employ a full-time paid secretary for the local civic group. Members named to the secretary committee were Jim Wauser, Dr. T. E. Stonebrook, Hubert Cleveland and L. L. Scott.

Forty Attend ISC Fire School at Eldora

More than forty men attend the ISC sponsored fire school in Eldora with James Peterson of Iowa State College explaining firefighting apparatus. Attendance averages over 40, with final session next Tuesday at the Youth Building where certificates will be issued.
