Eldora youth rally program set for Sunday in Iowa Falls

Eldora young people will lead a devotional at the Youth Rally in Iowa Falls Sunday at 3 30 p m at the Congregational church to close National Youth Week activities. The Eldora group will meet at 2 30 p m and attend in a body. Miss Nancy Hicks will be principal speaker. The Iowa Falls boys quartet will sing. Lunch will follow the afternoon session. Local youths helped at Crosley Farm Store open house Saturday and a basketball game at Reinbeck tonight caused a canteen postponement.

Alden Man Dies In Truck Crash In Illinois

Alden resident Truman Hovertsen about 50 was killed when his truck collided with another near Rochelle and caught fire. Two others in the second truck also died. Survived by wife Bessie Weaver, 15 children some living in Iowa, parents, siblings. Funeral services held at Alden and Rose Grove church Radcliffe with local pastors officiating.

Marriage Licenses Issued in Early January Cases

Emil Neift and Berna Dine Van Hove of Steamboat Rock received marriage licenses dated January 23. O E Smith of Spirit Lake and Roxy Johnson of Eldora were licensed January 28.

Supt Schmidt To Address Iowa Teachers Group

Supt F K Schmidt of Eldora will be one of the headliners at the Iowa State Education Association delegate assembly in Des Moines. He will report Friday on findings of a state wide survey of old age and survivors insurance for non elective state and school employees. Delegates will set the legislative program for 1953 and discuss finance certification and state administration.Residents of Hardin County include Ruth Schuck Iowa Falls, Willard Riekena Iowa Falls, and Kent Boyd Ackley as delegates.

Tigers in Polio Benefit Game at Dows High School

Eldora Tigers played a benefit basketball game at Dows High School Tuesday evening with proceeds going to the polio fund. The Lions Club sponsored the event and advance ticket sales neared $200 with receipts expected to rise. The Madcats five man band provided halftime entertainment.

USO Campaign Aims to Raise Local Funds in Hardin County

A Monday meeting organized Hardin County USO drive volunteers to raise 1847 dollars for entertainment and recreation for servicemen. A. F. Kasemeier named secretary treasurer. Hollis Miles and Mrs. Grace Van Patter co chair the effort with twenty veterans representatives attending. A report meeting for all workers is planned at Eldora Legion club rooms next Monday evening.

C Q Short Celebrates 25 Years in Eldora Shoe Repair

This month marks C Q Short’s 25th anniversary in the Eldora shoe repair business with special February sale prices on merchandise and repairs. Short came to Eldora from Adel in 1927 to work for James L Brown, then opened his own shop east of the theatre in 1935. He and his wife have two children Jerry, a high school senior, and Mrs Wm Fowles who stays in Eldora while her husband serves as a lieutenant.

Community Cake Sale Backs Polio Drive For $50

Hardin County residents and Cashway Super Market raised about 50 dollars for the 1952 polio drive. The baked goods sale last Friday and Saturday, under Mrs Grace Rutherford and the American Legion Auxiliary, drew many buyers. Names of several donors were omitted in the rush, but listed contributors include Mesdames Warren, Bolar, Schimmeler, Abbas, Burns, Canada, Priske, Ridout, Clay, Van Patter, Neubauer, Perkins, Coons, Mitchell, Perkins, Beasley, Oehlert, Teske, Halfpop, Murdock, Cox, Dettbarn, Alma Nehring, Pagel, Blanche Cox, and others.

Farmers Elevator Holds Annual Meet at Hubbard

Members of the Farmers Co operative Elevator Company Hubbard held their annual meeting in the high school gym last Saturday morning with 155 in attendance. Henry Arensmeier was elected to the Board to fill a vacancy from Ernest Blome resignation. Walter Balvant was reelected. The year’s sales reached a record high of 823425 40 dollars. After the business session dinner was served by the Band Mothers and the afternoon program was at Hubbard Theatre.

Damages Sought In Hubbard Auto Collision Suit

Carl A. Swanstrom of Polk County Oregon seeks $16,495.30 in a Hubbard district court case alleging injuries from a July 31 1951 collision on Highway 65 near Honey Creek Corner. Plaintiff claims Karl Becker driven Nash at 40 mph failed to yield at a stop sign causing the crash and permanent injuries including a broken back and loss of earnings.

4 H Leaders Honored At Turkey Dinner In High School

Hardin County 4-H leaders and spouses were guests of honor as Kiwanis Club members hosted a turkey dinner in the home economics room at 7 o clock. Musical entertainment by Iowa State Training School boys directed by Jack Puckett preceded by arrangements led by Charles Smith John Essig and Hillis Wilson.

Eldora Firemen Hold Annual Ball Date Feb 22

The Eldora Firemen announce their annual ball to be held Friday Feb 22 at the 1.6.C.F. Ball with the Cavalier's band of Hampton providing music. Floyd Hurtt chairs the event with a committee including Bill Luick Ralph Allbee Raymond Mitchell Wallace Cordes Wesley Willig Harold Rolph. Admission is $1 per couple and tickets are available from fire department members. Proceeds support local needs, following last benefit funds used to buy a hospital resuscitator.

Eldora school students conduct a week long drive to raise funds for the county polio campaign. Teachers spoke to classes about urgency and use of funds. A gym movie show awaits if the 100 percent goal nears. By Wednesday night over 85 dollars were collected.

Seek Judgment For Damages In Car Crash

Dorothy M. Smith and Albert Smith of Des Moines seek 248.11 in damages from Paul M. Gaunt and J. M. Hadley of New Providence after a May 27 1951 collision on Highway 65 two thirds of a mile south of Hubbard. The Hadley driven Dodge reportedly cut in front of the Smiths’ Chevrolet, causing damages with costs requested.

An Eldora organizational meeting at the First Methodist church study hall outlined plans for a new Boy Scout Troop. Leaders and scoutmaster have not been chosen yet, but the troop committee is forming with hopes to accept members soon.

Crosley Farm Store to Celebrate 22 Years With Open House

Crosley Farm Store and Hatchery marks 22 years at the same location with an all day open house. Four educational films for farmers, a guessing contest, and free gifts for all ages are planned. Turkey sandwiches will be served 1:30 to 5:00 by Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y members. The celebration includes a new front on the hatchery section and interior remodeling to add display space. Smith Held for Parole Violation

Rus sel Smith of Eldora was ordered committed to Ft Madison for parole violation stemming from a sodomy conviction. He pleaded guilty in October to sodomy and was paroled for good behavior but was detained after alleged contact with a 17 year old and out-of-town trips. Sheriff Hodgson said transfer to Ft Madison is planned unless action is taken.

Set Dates For Immunization At Eldora School

Eldora high school announces letters to parents urging immunization for diphtheria and smallpox. Diphtheria shots with Dr. W. H. VanTiger on Feb 8 at 1 PM. smallpox shots on Feb 22. A 50 cent per child charge. Older students assist. preschool children welcome.

Bob Schneider of Des Moines is named golf pro at Pine Lake country club this season. A former Eldora resident and Drake University graduate, he will begin duties this week and offers golf instruction for adults and children. Schneider is among the state's top golfers and plans to compete in pro meets this year. Frank Gurdette, employed at the club, will return to Algona to run his service station after coming from California last year.

Hubbard Man Retires to Help Older Citizens in Hubbard

William H. Dreier 61, longtime Hubbard resident, plans to retire from farming to lead a community aging initiative.
