Rev. Cliff Sanders urges Christmas focus on Christ’s birth and sacrifice. He links Bethlehem’s manger to the cross, citing scripture to affirm Jesus came to die for humanity and to redeem mankind, urging readers to turn from seasonal rush to faith in Christ this Christmas.
Eldora churches schedule Christmas season services and programs through December 25. Lutheran youth present The Colors of Christmas Monday. Catholic masses set for December 24 and 25. Church of Christ youth Christmas program December 23 with family party. Baptist Christmas program December 23. Congregational communion on December 24. United Methodist children program December 23 followed by an candlelight service December 23 led by senior high youth.
The Second National Bank of Fidora will close at 1 00 PM on December 24 to allow employees more time with their families. It will reopen at its regular time on December 26.
Harrison Associates proposes a site development and comprehensive plan for Eldora’s Swimming Pool Park including playground, tennis, shuffleboard, ice pond with warming house, Little League area, and parking. The project aims for a 50 50 federal match funded pool park improvement with city paying prep costs. January updates promised by Mayor Gould.
Roy J. Clampitt 85, a former New Providence area farmer, died of cancer Sunday December 16 at Mercy Hospital Des Moines. He worked over 40 years with the American Friends Service Committee, spent two years in Mexico for AFSC, helped establish the Grinnell Institute of International Relations, and graduated Grinnell College in 1911 with an honorary 1971 Doctor of Humane Letters. Surviving are his wife Pauline two daughters Amy and Beth three sons Lawrence Richard Philip a brother Wendell Clampitt two sisters and nine grandchildren. Memorial services were held Tuesday at the Des Moines Valley Friends Meeting and his body was willed to the University of Iowa Medical College.
Merlyn Bergeson Segal of Ackley and Elaine Weaver, both listed as legal residents. Carrol Adams nineteen of Gifford and Anna Reynolds nineteen of Cedar Falls obtained marriage licenses.
An Eldora man, Thomas Hagen, 61, was injured Thursday morning when his 1969 Chevrolet struck a Chicago Northwestern Railroad train near Infanseat Company. He was taken to Eldora Community Hospital with facial and leg abrasions after frost on the windows impaired his view. Engineer Jack Vernon Smith of Marshalltown reported the train stopped five car lengths after impact, with about $50 damage to the train.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday December 22 at 2 p.m. from Biershorn Funeral Home in Union for Carl Bryant who died early Wednesday morning at Eldora Community Hospital. Rev. Chester Werft will officiate with interment in Miller Cemetery near Union.
George Strait of New Providence has started duties as a patrolman on the Eldera Police force per Chief Galen Bosch. Strait lacks police academy training and aims for certification. he replaces John Berman alongside fulltime officers Bosch, Faris, and Rinday, with Faris resigning effective January 1 as interviews continue.
Henry Edwin Wheeler 80, longtime Eldora Post Office employee, died Tuesday at Eldora Community Hospital. Funeral Friday 2 p.m. at United Church of Christ with Rev. Paul Lyster. burial Eldora Cemetery. Pallbearers named. soloist and organist listed. Arrangements by Longenecker Funeral Home. Born November 19, 1903 at Steamboat Rock. married Beulah Bailey September 1, 1915. Survived by wife, sister, and several nieces and nephews. Preceded by parents and siblings.

Winners must be present to claim. those with drawn numbers have until 9 p m Thursday December 20 to claim at the Eldora Chamber of Commerce. Santa visits this week at the Chamber office with photo sessions 7 to 9 p m Thursday Friday Saturday. A free movie Sunday December 22 at 1 p m Grand Theatre followed by Santa at 2 30 p m at the courthouse with treats from the American Legion post. Eldora retail stores are urged to open Sunday afternoon December 23 for shoppers. most will be open Monday December 24.
Eldora city officials weigh a Sunday beer license for Parris as Richard Thenhaus rejects any Sunday permit. The council grants regular licenses to Thenhaus and Bowman's Lounge amid a push to amend the 1973 budget and set a public hearing. Appointments to local boards are announced as city government plans proceed.
Langstritz Construction owner Roper Langstritz asked Eldora City Council for a permit to build a 12 unit, three two story brick veneer wood framed apartments at the former Lovell Denniston lumber yard on Washington Street and ith Avenue. The plan would include 40 parking spaces and cost about 295000. The proposal fails fire limit requirements per local code and a special variance is being studied with a January council meeting planned.
Local advertisers and correspondents are urged the Eldora Herald Ledger will publish early for Christmas and New Year. The December 25 issue ships December 22. the January 1 issue ships December 29. Friday’s publication dates remain unchanged for two weeks.
The Iowa Highway Commission released a five year program noting no major Hardin county projects for 1974 beyond completion of the Highway 175 work east of Eldora. A 1975 bridge replacement near Iowa Falls is planned, with other Hardin county items tied to the proposed 520 freeway and right of way purchases through 1978.
