Prizes Listed In Home Lighting Holiday Contest

The Christmas lighting contest for homes and apartments, run by the Dora Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Eldora Newspapers, offers three divisions window tree and lawn. First prizes are $13 hand painted lamps from Central States Electric. second prizes $10 merchandise from Hardin County Savings Bank. third prizes $7.50 merchandise from the Chamber. Entries due at the Chamber by December 16 with judging by three out of town judges on December 18.

Carol Sing Planned by Hi and Tri-Hi Groups

The Hi and Tri-Hi Y clubs plan a Monday evening carol sing as the first in a series. They will travel by truck with a public address system to visit the county home training school nursing home hospital and several shut-in homes. Additional church group trips are planned before Christmas.

Wildlife Directors Discuss Scout Matters At Club Meeting

Wildlife club directors met last evening to plan the Explorer Scout setup for the coming year. They faced difficulty arranging club activities and securing a tender for the troop. Some members proposed Wildline sponsor the Explorers financially in 1951 while parents run scout affairs. They also planned arrangements for testing the annual meeting of the club this month.

A marriage license was filed for Tene Hagen and lene Hagen in New Hartford. At a regional soil conservation conference in Nevada, Lloyd Roland Alden B R Wood New Providence Richard Pulse Dale Shadle Wayne Fisher and John Hawkes attended. Dick Rose began work at the Community Food Market in Steamboat Rock replacing Harold Rutherford who took a Town job. A collision at the Lutheran church corner in Eldora between Bruce McAfee and Mrs R R Bateson caused vehicle damage with no injuries.

Rotary Club Treasury Boost From Eleven Volunteers

Eleven Rotarians joined and raised eleven dollars for the Rotary club treasury on Tuesday under snowy weather. Slow travel due to the storm caused several members to arrive late as the group organized.

County Buys Three Two-Ton Trucks for County Fleet

Hardin county supervisors authorized purchase of three two-ton trucks at a recent letting. Vehicles will be secured from GMLC of El Dora, Laikin Chevrolet Co of Steam Boat Rock, and Pfeil Motor Co of Radcliffe. Dump boxes will be purchased separately and installed on the trucks.

Methodist Series Closes Friday Night

Special evening meetings at the Methodist church have continued this week with Dr F F Travis district superintendent as speaker. The service will close at 7 30 this Friday evening as part of the state wide evangelistic advance program conducted by the denomination.

Eldora Council Hears Street Plan Showings and Licenses

Eldora city council held a regular session. Roger Hahn of Hargrave Construction Co. of Cedar Rapids displayed films of blacktop streets built elsewhere to illustrate services offered for the 1950 street improvement program. Hahn said Hargrave would repave the first two blocks of North Edington in spring. Delbert Schuler, vice in Pine Room tavern operations, received a beer permit and a cigarette license, while WEIB club was also granted a beer permit. Wm Ethridge's night watchman and pumpman resignation due to ill health was accepted, with appreciation for his service since August 1946. E. J. Foster was named temporary replacement.

Church Names Officers At Annual Meeting In El

Members of the Congregational church elected officers for 1951 including Clarence DeCook as trustee, deacons L. L. Scott and O. C. Jensen, deaconesses Mrs. George Janssen and Mrs. Jeannette Wickey, and filled a vacancy with Mrs. J. W. Schlampp. The meeting approved a pastor raise, a visitation project, and a budget, and discussed building an interdenominational church in Japan.

Man Found Dead At State School

Dale Garver a 27 year old former night cottage supervisor at the state training school in Galesburg was found dead in a room of the night men’s building with a German Lager pistol in his hand. The death is reported as likely self inflicted. Dr W E Van Tiser examined the body and Coroner E H Biersborn was notified. Garver, a World War II veteran and American Legion member, had worked at the school about a month and recently resigned. His body was taken to Longenecker funeral home.

Forage Club to Hear Darbyshire on Dec. 14

William Darbyshire of the state soil conservation committee will address the Hardin County Forage club Thursday December 14 at 1 30 PM at the Odd Fellows hall in Eldora. He farms near Rockwell City and will discuss high quality grasses and legumes in beef cattle operations. Dick Pulse extension director will lead a discussion on forages in swine production. Club officers Homer Calkins and Wendell Clampitt will outline a county newsletter plan. Attendance is the only membership requirement.

Potgeter to testify in Washington on excess profits tax

George Potgeter of Steamboat Rock will appear before the U S Senate Finance Committee in Washington to oppose applying excess profits tax to cooperatives. He will limit oral remarks to ten minutes with written statement for the record. Community Sing Recording On Courthouse Steps

With heavy snowfall and near freezing temperatures, about 40 people attended the first of two outdoor community sings on the courthouse steps. Rev. Ralph B. Imes led as master of ceremonies and F K Schmidt directed songs. Rev W R Ehlert projected lyrics via stereopticon on a screen attached to the Community Food Market truck. William Hoag of the high school faculty recorded the event, with a similar recording planned for Wednesday Dec 20.

Steamboat Rock to Show 1951 Chevrolets at Lunken

Lunken Chevrolet Co. of Steamboat Rock will display the new 1951 Chevrolets under a direct dealers franchise for the first time in the town’s history. The historic agency began in 1927 with M. Ernie Gellhorn in the same building, earlier operated as an Eldora franchised outlet. The 1951 model goes on display at the Way Chevrolet/Eldora/Luiken garages tomorrow with radio broadcast coverage. After the display, attendees enjoyed coffee and cookies in the courthouse hall.

Man Dies After Nov 26 Crash Raises County Toll

Hey Loais age 60 of Pomeroy died from injuries suffered in an Alden area accident on Nov 26. Hardin County 1950 traffic deaths rose to 12, an all time high. A truck with an REA crew overturned on icy Highway 65 near Lote Tree station north of the 65 57 junction, killing three. Previous county high was eight. files show 10 deaths in 1942 during gas and tire rationing.

Santa to visit Eldora for mail pickup Saturday

Santa Claus will arrive by plane west of Eldora and land in town to collect letters in a Chamber of Commerce mail box. He will be escorted by officers and residents, speak at the New Grand theatre at 2:30, and admit children under 12 free.

Kiddies Free Show At Grand Saturday

The New Grand theatre will show the operetta Bohemian Girl with Laurel and Hardy at 2 30 pm on Saturday. The event is free for children and delayed half an hour for Santa Claus. Sponsored by the theatre and the Eldora Chamber of Commerce. A second free show on December 16 will be sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

County School Board Meeting Set for Monday Night

Hardin county board of education will convene next Monday at 7 30 p m in the county superintendent's office to discuss school transportation with W T Eesten, director of transportation in the state department of public instruction, in attendance.

County officials consider proceeding with a two story addition to the west side of the present structure. Des Moines architects Smith and Vorhees will meet supervisors on December 19 to discuss feasibility and contract timing amid material shortages and civilian use curtailments.

Eldora authorities announce free parking on six December days as a holiday observance. parking meters will be covered with paper sacks labeled Merry Christmas Reserved for Rural Shoppers to relax parking restrictions during the season with local cooperation urged.

Pine Lake Wildlife Club announces a stag fish fry at the clubhouse Friday evening December 15 from 9:30 to 10:00. Tickets are 1 dollar per plate. This will be the last stag of the year. Committees were to be named at a special meeting of the directors yesterday.

Despite a snowstorm 170 persons attended the Farmers Cooperative Creamery annual dinner in the gymnasium. Ellis Perry of Eldora was re elected director, John Follett of Eldora to replace Bill Vigars, with Bernnard Reece Don Cobb H C Roll and Raymond Clark holding over. F E Schmidt led a magic and musical program with Mary Farmer and Gordon Dickinson performing a vocal duet accompanied by George Fags. All three are local high school students.

Rites Wednesday for Mrs Herman Rieks

Services were held Wednesday at the Andrle Crops funeral home for Mrs. Herman Rieks 50 who died Sunday in Eldora. The service included singing by Mrs F R Price with accompanist Mrs C R Johnson. Pallbearers were Ted Broer Jim Reece Will Puttkamer Clarence Reece Lloyd Dooley and George Kennedy. Burial followed in Eldora cemetery. Esther Marie Cummings born Nov 18 1900 in this county married Ray Cowell in Eldora in 1912. She later wed Herman Rieks on Oct 21 1932 in Illinois and is survived by six children her father and two brothers George Cummings Lehigh and Max Cummings Chicago.

Farm Bureau buys Noble building west of Eldora church

Hardin county Farm Bureau purchased the Jerry Noble cement block building west of the Baptist church for 9000 dollars. Noble will rent the east half for shoe repair until May 1, 1951 and then relocate. The Bureau plans remodeling to meet its offices and services needs, funded by 9000 dollars from the building fund.

Reports on the Christian Rural Overseas Program canvass in Hardin County show incomplete totals. Hubbard reports $471.25 raised. Grant completed at $399. Concord $392.50 with two school districts yet to report. Providence $393 to date. Canvass set for March 30, some workers still finishing. Eldora High Christmas Concert Reordered to Dec 13

Eldora High School’s music department will present its annual Christmas concert Monday night December 13 at 2 o'clock in the gym instead of Sunday December 10 as originally scheduled. Sixteen selections will be performed under the direction of Charles Britsch vocal instructor and Warne Aur instrumental teacher. Groups include band mixed chorus and glee club.

Taxi to Take Handicapped Children to School Here

Eldora school board members discussed transporting three physically handicapped students to school and home at $1 per day for all three, financed by state funds, donations, and organizations. Norma Burns, Connie Kromunga, and Dana Schumacher partly disabled by polio or recovering from surgery.
