1959 County Corn Crop Sets All Time Record
Hardin county produced a county record corn crop of 12,292,000 bushels in 1959 according to preliminary Iowa Annual Farm Census figures from the Iowa Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Kossuth topped all counties with over 17 million bushels, while Benton and Potta Walliamie followed, and Grundy led in yield per acre at 62.6 bushels. Hardin ranked second in yield per acre at 77.6 bushels, with Benton third at 77.1.

89th Hardin County Fair Opens With Record 4-H Entries
The 89th Hardin County Fair opens Monday Aug 15 at the fairgrounds with a record 920 4 H girl exhibits among 78 classes in home furnishings. Demonstrations and booths will run Tuesday through Thursday in the youth building with judging by Mrs Charles Clausen Ackley and Mrs Donald Roseland Gilman. Major events include 225 FFA and 4 H members competing Aug 15 19, 253 baby beef entries, a new Chevrolet car giveaway, a tractor pulling contest with $240 prize money, and nightly entertainment from Riverboat Follies to stock car races and Thrillcade. Season tickets and grandstand seats available.

Mike Davis age 11 son of Mr and Mrs John Davis of Eldora caught a five and a quarter pound northern pike, 28 inches, while fishing at the old wagon bridge over the Iowa River south of Eldora about 8 15 p m Tuesday. He was fishing with Art Ziesman and others as part of a youth building week with 4 H committee women and volunteers assisting.

Rooks Build Major Earthen Fill Dam Southeast of Eldora
A large earthen fill dam is under construction on the Cecil i Rooks farm southeast of Eldora. The eight acre lake will hold 78 acre feet of water, with depths up to 30 feet, and a 40 foot high bank. Cost about $10,000, with 50 percent cost share through the Agricultural Conservation Program.

About 226 4 H and FFA show men will compete in Hardin County Fair junior livestock show August 15 18. Entries set a record high with 253 animals. prior high was 282 in 1959. Herefords Angus Shorthorns and baby beef heifers lead the total with 04 97 25 and 37 respectively. Also 25 breeding beef heifers and 15 pens of Junior Feeder Cattle. Sheep show grows with 70 market lambs and 22 purebred lambs. 54 dairy heifers two more than last year. Swine around 50 market pigs and 45 purebreds. Preparation day Monday August 15 in place by 4 9 p m. Judging Tuesday begins with baby beef and steer heifers judged by A Ewing at Iowa State Univ. Wednesday starts baby beef and steer heifer classes. Thursday cattle and sheep judged with Borcharding and David Flint placing sheep. Explorers from Eldora Steamboat Rock Radcliffe Providence Union and other areas listed.

First H I Tall Corn Entry 10 Ft 3 In
Roland Hendricks, a farmer from Eldora township, enters a 10 ft 3 in tall corn stalk in the Herald-Index Tall Corn Contest. He farms a 10 acre field on the McEvoy place three miles east of Eldora on highway 57, with stalks uniform and reaching 10 feet. The winner receives a plaque at the Corn Festival in October, courtesy of local papers, with entrants from Farmery in Hardin Grundy and Marshall counties. Hendricks’s entry is on display at the Herald-Index building on Edington Ave.

Willard Martin was elected and William Dobbrunz re-elected to the Lawn Hill Co op board of directors at the annual meeting held in the company buildings at Lawn Hill on Saturday. About 750 people attended as the group reported gross earnings of 247 158.20 and net savings from operations of 92 032.23 before deductions. Net savings retained totaled 13 16.69. Mrs S Dale Moon won the women’s door prize, Maurice Cook the men’s prize, Sharon Hagen the children’s prize pony from Reisinger Sons Eldora. The New Providence school band, led by Vincent Chorne, played a concert before the meeting.
