Landscaping at new elementary school kicks off

Tull Leads Colorado Debaters in Oklahoma Meet

James Tull of Eldora was among five Colorado university students in the Missouri Valley Forensic league event at the University of Oklahoma. The two man Colorado team won six of eight debates as they argued the U S should create River Valley authorities nationwide. Tull, a Colorado junior set to graduate next February, previously debated at EHS.

Nelson to Start at Star Clothing and Shoe Store

Dean Nelson 24 of Alden will begin work at Star Clothing and Shoe Store here next Monday replacing Gene Modlin who moved to OcWelth. Nelson a four year Air Force veteran is married with a two year old son and will move his family into the Jack Leonard duplex.

Four Eldora Residents to Appear on Live Telecast

Four Eldora people, Jim Hauser Gerald Modlin and Mr and Mrs Ben Juchems, will appear on the RFD news program on WHO TV Monday noon to explain the Days slated in June. Hauser and Modlin are co chairmen of the local steering committee. The Juchems live on the farm to be used during the two day event. Des Moines station is part sponsor of Field Days.

The Eldora Girl Scout spring council meeting will be held at 9 a m in the city park next Tuesday. Attendees will plan the summer camps and enjoy a picnic breakfast.

Rock wash leaves gap at Iowa river dam center

Four Republican races are noted while no Democrat is present as high water washes rock from the Iowa river dam center. A bulge forms in the wall and dirt settles in the river bed. Authorities say the structure is not threatened. New rock will be placed, a stockpile is on site, and repairs are expected soon. Flood gates opened to reroute the main channel.

Rural Teachers Hold Meeting In Hardin County

The Hardin County Rural Teachers association met at Buckeye consolidated school on April 6 to discuss textbooks in arithmetic and spelling the profile charts from January Iowa Every Pupils Tests and areas of strength and weakness for students in grades three through eight. Other topics included parent teacher conferences supplementary reading materials permanent records teacher certification and employment with the next year's first meeting tentatively set for Aug. 17 per County Supt. Kermith S Huehn.

Brindle To Get Merit Certificate

Laura J Brindle Whitten and Gary E Diehl Grundy Center are among 4300 high school seniors honored with merit certificates by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. The winners, among 60000 seniors nominated by principals to take the October NMSC tests, are in the top half of one percent in ability.

Youth Rally Draws 200 at Evergreen Meeting

Over 200 youths and sponsors attended the spring Youth Fellowship Rally of the Evangelical United Brethren churches in district 9 at Evergreen. Guests included College quartet members Robert Hefti Dick Brown Norland Bisley and Bill Miller and Westmar College VP Dr. A V Howland who shared testimonies in message and music. An afternoon talent hour featured church vocal instrumental music and oratory. Supper was served by the host church.

Fifteen Teachers Return Signed Contracts

Fifteen teachers including Clement Marsden and Anne Bender signed contracts with Supt. Paul J. Simons for next year. Marsden's high school principal pay is 5300 and Bender's is 3900, with Bender shifting to administration in the elementary system. Jeanne Campbell moves to sixth grade, with a remedial program planned under Simons’ supervision to assist slow learners. Conference Women Missionary Meeting In Iowa Oskaoosa

Nearly 300 attendees gathered at Wollen Penn College Oskaoosa for the spring conference of the Women's Missionary Union of Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends. Fish Fry Draws Warm Night Guests From Kiwanis Rotary

More than 100 members and guests attended a fish fry at Pine Lake Wildlife Club on Tuesday evening hosted by Warm Night school and the El Dora Kiwanis and Rotary clubs. Mr and Mrs Ernest Wright shared slides from a trip to Europe and the Middle East. Wright, the state farm advisor for state institutions, spoke briefly as part of the event.

Attorney 72 Dies in Hampton After Heart Attack

H. 4H. Uhlenhopp 72 of Hampton father of District Court Judge Harvey Uhlenhopp died Tuesday after a heart attack suffered three days earlier. He had practiced law for many years in Hampton.

Stinson Files For Franklin County Attorney Nomination

Keith J. Stinson, Hampton attorney, filed nomination papers in Franklin county Tuesday seeking a third term as county attorney. The papers were circulated by supporters ahead of the deadline. Stinson’s federal trial in Cedar Rapids begins Monday on charges of illegal transportation of funds.

Reverend John J. Brittell dies in California

Word comes to Eldora of the sudden death of Reverend John J. Brittell aged 70 on Friday April 6 from a heart attack at his Visalia California home. Funeral services were held Tuesday with burial in Visalia. Survived by his wife two sons John at home and Robert of Homestead Park Pa and four daughters Dorothy Kelsen Marjorie Newhouse Evelyn Lady Peggy Cowles all of various cities. He served the Presbyterian church at Ackley from 1927 to 1941 and will be remembered by many in the community. They have lived in California since 1945.

County warns to remove road obstructions along highways

The Hardin County Index reports the county board of supervisors notified property owners that obstructions along county highways must be removed. County auditor Fred A. Reed said most obstructions are electric fences and will be removed or moved by highway crews if not removed by owners.

Word has been received of the death on Monday of Mrs. Fred Yantis age 58 in LaPlata Missouri. The Yantis family lived in the Liscomb and Liberty neighborhoods before moving to Missouri. Pre Kindergarten Pupils To Register This Friday

A cast of 50 students from Eldora high school will perform Calimus Elardo on Wednesday at 8 p m in the high school auditorium. The program includes Broadway scenes and original compositions.
