Contracts Expected For South Hardin Teachers This Week

Most south Hardin county teachers who had not yet received contracts for 1954 55 were expected to get them by week’s end. Eldora Hubbard and Union already issued contracts, with Whitten New Providence Radcliffe Owasa and Steamboat Rock slated for soon. April 15 is the return deadline. Supt. Starr resigned Owasa. Donnelson IA. Hubbard supt A H Brauer likely to return. Langemann to coach girls basketball and baseball. Hubbard seeks a new boys coach. Steamboat Rock contracts due this week. New Providence contacted. Whitten Radcliffe undecided.

Butler Named Lay Leader At Annual Meeting

The First Methodist church annual meeting heard district superintendent Dr. John C. Ruthman preside. John L. Butler was named Lay Leader for the year as officers were re-elected. Leota Hardy Lyle Hubbard Lloyd Paimiter Claude Pfander Will Eller and Mrs. Chester Vigars were new stewards. Bishop F Gerald Ensley will attend centennial day September 26. Reverend Moore’s return was recommended pending North Iowa Annual Methodist appointments.

Owasa Names School Head For 1954 55

Edwin E. Green 34 of Frederika was named superintendent of the Owasa consolidated school for 1954 55 by the Owasa school board. He will take the post July 1 on a one year contract and succeeds B H Starr who leaves for the Donnelson Iowa district. Six teachers signed contracts at the Tuesday night meeting though coaches Clell Busby and James See did not.

Bockes Accepts Govts Position in Missouri

Eldora electrician Myrle Bockes announced he will join the U S Engineering department in Missouri as head electrician at the Leverton dam, eight miles south of Hannibal. He will sell Eldora Electric Co. and move his family after the current school year ends.

Conference in June at Sioux City Named Delegates

Don LaVelle was named lay delegate to the conference with Kermith Huehn listed as alternate for the June Sioux City gathering.

Roland Withdraws From Short Term For Primary Clarity

Lloyd Roland a Republican candidate for three years on the Hardin county board of supervisors said he will withdraw his name from the ballot for the two month unexpired term this year. He had filed for the term starting January 1 1955 and for the short unexpired term but will drop the short term to avoid voter confusion in the June 7 primary. Fred J Klein the Democrat seeking the same three year term did not file for the short term.

Hardin Board Lets Contracts Monday

Hardin County supervisors awarded contracts for material needs. Iowa Concrete Products of Ames received a sewer pipe contract for 3500 feet at $1.53 per foot. Bridge lumber and piling split between Pioneer Lumber Co Des Moines for 3865 and Frod den Bridge Lumber and Supply Co Greene for 7150.

Strothcamp Enters County Auditor Race As Democrat

Merle E. Strothcamp of Hubbard filed county auditor papers last weekend just before the deadline. The 25 year old Democrat runs unopposed in the June primary and is a Radcliffe high school graduate who studied commerce at Elsworth Junior College class of 1949. He served two years in the Army in World War II and previously worked in business with his father Adolph Strothcamp at the Sherman Implement. He is single.

Bekemeier Hardware Remodel Starts This Week

Preliminary work for a store wide remodeling project began this week at Bekemeier hardware. It is expected to be completed early this fall. The El Dora Mill and Mfg Co will begin making new fixtures next week.

Last rites for Mrs. Kenneth S. Wooten 54 will be at Community church Union at 2 p m with Rev. B H Harris in charge. Interment in Union cemetery. Survived by husband five children and 12 grandchildren. Born April 1 1900 daughter of Eugene Reece lifelong Hardin county resident.

Mrs Sylvia A Swope daughter of Mr and Mrs M Z Albers Eldora was elected president of the Waterloo Association for Childhood Education last week She will represent the group at the Mid west American Childhood Education Study Conference in St Paul Minnesota April 18 23.

Hoegh Urges Voter Duty At Eldora Rotary Meeting

Iowa Attorney General Leo A. Hoegh, a Republican gubernatorial hopeful, told Eldora Rotarians that bad politicians are elected by non voters and urged citizens to back local law enforcement. He warned against complacency and highlighted enforcement of liquor laws and youth respect for the law.

Three Injured In Two Car Crash Near Wellsburg

Three people were injured in a two car head on collision about four miles west of Wellsburg on a secondary road around 6 p.m. Tuesday. The injured are Wilt A. Jutting 63 Wellsburg Charles L Meints 59 Steamboat Rock and Mrs Meints 58 all admitted to Grundy Center hospital. Jutting and Mrs Meints were noted as most seriously hurt with Jutting undergoing surgery Tuesday evening. Mrs Meints was thrown through the windshield of the car driven by her husband.

Career Day at Eldora High Set for April 12

Eldora high school plans the third annual Career Day on April 12 to expose students to various vocations. Principal Kermith Huehn said local residents will lead sessions, with six Hardin county schools joining Eldora for the event, including Owasa Alden Ackley Radcliffe Hubbard and New Providence. Further details will follow next week.

March Term Of Court Ends Here

Judge John M Schaupp closed the March term of district court with one man fined 300 dollars and given a 60 day suspension of his driver's license. James Van Blethen of Minnesota pleaded guilty. The next term will be in May a two week term with no jury scheduled.

Registration for Eldora kindergarten today

Registration of children entering Eldora kindergarten next fall takes place in the Hardin building today from 9 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 3 p.m. No kindergarten classes are held today. Supt. Paul J. Simons says children must be five by November 15 to be eligible.

Scout Leaders To Meet Monday

Eldora Boy Scout adult leaders will gather Monday night at 8 30 at Congregational and Methodist churches to discuss reorganization and recruit more leaders. The meeting aims to boost local scouting and plan broader program discussion.

African Missionary To Be At Ivester

The Rev Richard Burger on furlough from Africa will lead evangelistic meetings at Ivester church starting Sunday at 7 45 p m and continuing through April 11. Burger and his wife have served two terms in Garkida and Wandali missions. he is a McPherson College and Bethany Biblical Seminary graduate and pastor of the Udell Church of the Brethren in Center Ville.

Final Lenten Service Sunday in Methodist church

The fourth in a series of joint Lenten services by the Methodist and Congregational churches will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in the Methodist church. Dr. H. E. Bernhardt of Iowa State Teachers College will deliver the message. The Methodist choir will sing as Rev. John Moore and Rev. R B Imes lead the service.

Judgment and Appeal Filed This Week

Two new cases were filed in the clerk of court Fred Miller’s office this week. Warren Kasischke of Iowa Falls appeals a $5 fine and $6 costs for a stop sign violation to the district court, seeking a May term hearing. attorneys are Oppen and Wessels. L. D. Omelik of Iowa Falls seeks $201 damages for a pickup truck loss and $20 per day for lost license use from March 8, 1954, until license restoration, in an Iowa Falls accident on Jan 17. Russell Waggoner is the defendant. Omelik claims license suspension hindered custom butchering for farmers, causing daily losses. a jury trial is requested.

Funeral services for Mrs Lawrence Kelly here today

Funeral services for 36 year old Mrs Lawrence L Kelly of Eldora will be held at 2 30 PM from the First Methodist church with Rev John K Moore in charge. Interment will be at Mohall North Dakota. Survivors include her husband three children and her parents. Born November 12 1917 she was raised in Kenmare ND and worked for the Kenmare News before joining the Renville County Farmer in 1939. The couple farmed near Mohall until 1942. They moved to Eldora in 1950. Longenecker Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Three More Eldora Teachers Sign for 1954-55

Three more Eldora school staff returned signed contracts to Supt. Paul J. Simons this week. Ed Engstrom, girls basketball coach, Ruth Lamer, grade teacher, and Betty Albright, grade teacher, join 11 known to return next year. Teachers must respond by April 15. Half of the current staff of 36 have expressed plans for 1954-55.

Health meeting features Wendell Lawhead from ITHA

The Hardin County Tuberculosis Health Association will hold its annual meeting Tuesday with speaker Wendell Lawhead, health education consultant for the Iowa Tuberculosis and Health Association. He will discuss year around health education programs for the voluntary agency. A business meeting precedes a 6 30 p.m. dinner at Blanche and Ethels Tea Room.

Waller Leases Pine Lake Drive-In for Easter Opening

Mr and Mrs Harley A Waller of Eldora lease the Pine Lake state park drive in from W A Blankenship and plan an Easter weekend opening. The drive in will operate weekends until school ends with hours 6 p.m. to midnight on Fridays 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. to midnight Sundays. No inside service offered.

Hubbard Election Date Set for School Board Race

County superintendent M. Z. Albers has set April 21 as the tentative election date for Hubbard school board members in the enlarged district that starts July 1. Caucuses will be held Monday night in various areas to name candidates from those regions.

New Radcliffe Board Delayed Organizing July First

The new Radcliffe school board will not organize until July 1 when the enlarged district takes effect, a spokesman said yesterday. Members of the new board sit in on sessions run by the old Radcliffe independent district. Amos Rorem is the lone current member named to the new board.

Building Workshop to Start on Home Les Vinton Project

Eldora contractor Les Vinton will complete a 30 by 70 workshop and garage on the south Washington street site of the former Wallace property after purchasing it. The stuccoed structure, and a new seven room brick and stone residence 41 by 64, with basement dug, are planned for completion by June 15.

ASC Announces Reseal Program for 1954 Crops

Hardin county ASC launches a nationwide reseal drive to store 1953 price supported crops on farms. Iowa focuses on corn wheat oats and flaxseed with 40 million bushels needing reseal to solve storage. Loans cover up to 80 percent of cost and run four years at four percent interest.
