Literary spirit rises as Philals face Union Lit in a scheduled debate near term end. Union Lit accepted the challenge last Wednesday night and a three on three format is set with extra features for an open meeting of both societies. The event follows football season and precedes basketball, promising strong interest as a first large intersociety debate in years.
Union Literary Society held a regular meeting on Wednesday evening despite a forced postponement. The tariff issue dominated discussion with Sitler Millis and Montgomery defending protection against Farrell Nichols and Kehon. The negative side won two to one. Prof Souter gave an engaging talk on literary society work. The group adjourned to meet next Tuesday at 7 pm.
The Philal society held a Wednesday meeting with a tariff reform debate. MacDonnel and Butcher argued for the affirmative, H Gordon and Capehart spoke for the negative. judges sided with the negative. Dearing and Holcroft from Union Lit visited as a debate committee and accepted a challenge. The November 1 question asks if city councilmen should be elected at large rather than by wards.
Hanover aims to form a Glee Club as new singers join rehearsals in the Gymnasium. Professor Belcher, confident in the effort, plans a five to six week period to judge merit on punctuality and skill before selecting the club. He also plans an Orchestra formed from the 09 and 10 groups to support a varied evening program.
May Brucher and Frieda Bach defended the affirmative that socialism has been a success while Stella Kehoe and Fern McClure spoke for the negative. The spirited discussion concluded with a negative ruling.
The Zetes debated whether a large city benefits a college more than a small town. Hanover College won the judges decision with Minnie Beashan and Florenss Horsley defeating Currie Craig and Beulah Deputy. Miss Fitz of North Madison visited.
The piece compares St Mary's chances against Manual High and University School using past scores. It notes key absences including Weber and Millis, and lists a tentative starting lineup with Vancil Ramsay Voris Montgomery Drew Mann Reynolds H Fisher Cobb Voris and Captain Voris.
A lively Hallowe en social at the YM C A Gym raised funds and provided entertainment. Attendees enjoyed fudge and confections at a central booth, a mystery tent with an Egyptian fortune teller, a soft drink booth, pumpkin pies, and apple bobbing. Professors Hadley and Souter joined the fun with Miss Cain providing music as the spooky decorations set the mood. The event ended late into the night as groups lingered to chat.
The Sophomore hop committee secured a date for the event. Friday December 2nd was chosen with an admission of $1.75 per couple. Good music refreshments and a strong program are planned to ensure social success.
The student body enjoyed chapel as H. W. Gilbert sang The Holy City last Thursday morning. A similar musical feature will recur in services, and it is hoped Mr. Gilbert may be induced to sing again.
On Thursday October 27 1910 the senior class presented in mortar boards for the first time with the feminine seniors wearing the distinctive caps marking a milestone in campus graduation traditions.
