Philalathean Literary Society Banquets Highlight Banquet Evening

The Philalathean Literary Society hosted a banquet at the Sutherland Cafe with 34 guests. Toastmaster Professor Hadley and guests Professor Culbertson and Dr. Garritt attended, sharing thoughts on the value of literary societies and oratory.

Freshman Excursion Plans For River Trip

Freshman class meeting decided on the annual river excursion to proceed as the usual meet the other boat event. Fern Grove trip dropped due to cost and lack of upper classman support. May 17 set for the outing with tickets at 75 cents from class members.

The 1912 Commencement Week program lists events from June 7 to June 12. Activities include Commencement Exercises at 7 30 P M June 7, Baccalaureate Service June 9 10 30 A M with sermon by The President, Address to the Associations, Annual Field and Tennis Tournament, Senior Class Play, Board of Trustees meetings, reunion of Literary Societies, Diploma delivery, Alumni Dinner, Primary Oratorical Contest, and the Annual Commencement Exercises on June 12 at 10:00 P M.

Zetelathean Meeting Showcases Diverse Literary Program

The Zetelathean last Friday featured varied readings and numbers. Carrie Craig spoke on The Curiosities of Fashion, Florence Priest gave Contentment, and Alice Craig read Hiawatha's Wooing. Eula Deputy led The Greatness of St Paul, Florence Hensler declaimed Toe the Pure All Things Are Pure, and Freda Kunkel read Darwin. A Bird Programme was planned for May 10 to honor the Audubon Society gathering in Hanover.

1911 1912 Catalogues Available by Mail

Ad notes catalogues for 1911 and 1912 are out and will be mailed on application. It mentions Mrs. Jack Thompson formerly Miss Nellie Clemmons class of 1900 spending the summer there and invites readers to read the advertisements.

More New Students Amid Growing College Enrollment

The college reports record enrollment this term with many new students entering teacher training and regular courses. Thirteen new students joined from local high schools and one returning student arrived, listing names such as James Davis Otto Field Snodgrass and Marysville. Eleven come from New Washington high school and others from North Madison DuPont Deputy and Charles Town high schools.

Death of Rev Edward Baech A Hanover Alum In Delphi Ill

Revered Edward Baech born 1863 in Vincennes Indiana and class of 1890 at Hanover died of stomach cancer in Delphi Indiana after a long ministry. He served at Rensselaer Indianapolis Maroon Illinois Arcola and finally Delphi with wife Irene Richie Nelson and children Catherine and Edward surviving.

Governor Marshall appoints Professor Arthur M. Hadley of History and Economics as a delegate to the National Charity Conference to be held in Cleveland from June 12 to 19.

Diplomat Tom Dawson Dies in Washington D C

Thomas Cleveland Dawson former class of 1886 Hanover resident diplomatic officer of the state department died in Washington on May 1 after weeks of illness at age forty six. A native of Hudson Wisconsin he studied at Hanover and rose from Iowa lawyer to assistant attorney general before entering diplomacy in 1897. Known as the great pacificator in Latin American affairs he served as minister to several Latin American nations and later resident diplomatic officer in Washington.
