Winter Hours Set At Hampton Public Library

Mrs S W McKinley librarian announces winter hours for the Hampton Public Library children s room after a library board meeting on September 6. Effective September 7 the schedule runs Monday through Friday 3 00 to 5 00 p m except Tuesday and Thursday evenings 7 00 to 9 00 p m, Saturday 9 00 a m to 5 30 p m, regular story hours 10 00 to 10 30 a m each Thursday for three and four year olds.

The Highway Commission plans to remove 14 elm trees on the Des Moines Freeway right of way after infection, signaling a possible shift from sparing trees in future freeway construction. About 40 to 50 diseased elms have been removed in four years, with replanting studied and trees removed at Commission headquarters in Ames.

Electrocuted While On Job Kills Iowa Falls Worker

A 25 year old rural Hampton man Elmer LaRue was accidentally electrocuted on September 6 at the Ralston Purina plant in Iowa Falls while working for Todd and Sargent Construction Ames. He touched a high voltage line with a ladder and died instantly. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 PM at Green and Sletsemma funeral home Hampton with Rev J L Cave officiating. Burial will be in Upper Maynes Grove cemetery. LaRue was born May 21 1941 in Shell Lake Wisconsin, son of Mrs Josephine LaRue and Elmer LaRue.

Welfare payments down slightly in August in Franklin county

Franklin county welfare outlays for August totaled 326,852 a modest decline from July and June driven by six fewer cases. Medical Assistance to the Aged led the drop with 849 less than July, while Old Age Assistance rose to 18,172 and Aid to Disabled increased by 261 to 733 total.

Hunting Season Opens September 10 for Squirrels and Rabbits

Iowa’s Conservation Commission announced the opening of hunting season on September 10 for fox and gray squirrels and cottontail and jack rabbits. Squirrel bag limit six with twelve in possession. rabbit season ends February 19, 1967 with daily bag ten and no possession limit. All residents must have a hunting license. youths under 16 must be accompanied by a licensed adult.

LaRue Family Man Remains Survived in Minnesota

Little Falls Minnesota notes a man who lived previously in Wisconsin and Hampton for seven years. Survived by mother Mrs. Josephine LaRue of Hampton and father Elmer LaRue of Little Falls, four brothers Gary Mark and Lonne LaRue of Hampton and Robert LaRue of Diamond, Wisconsin, two sisters Diane Reynolds of Sheffield and Pamela LaRue of Hampton. Also survived by paternal grandmother Alta La Rue of Trego Wisconsin, maternal grandmother and step grandfather Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bird of Piedmont Missouri, and great grandmother Mrs. Laura Folte Iowa Falls. He was a member of the National Guard.

George G. Berlin, manager, announced a September 15 rate cut for Farm and Home Schedule A-1. Average member savings about $121 monthly based on 1965 usage of 839 kWh. Commission Changes Form for New Boat Registration

The State Conservation Commission issued a new type of Boat Registration Application replacing the old forms for issuance, renewal and transfer. The form allows recording up to eleven transactions and will be mailed to conservation officers, county recorders and more than four hundred boat dealers who are told to destroy old applications. Pre-addressed envelopes are provided for returning completed forms to Commission Headquarters in Des Moines.

Franklin county voters cast ballots in a quiet primary. Peter Ryken won the county supervisor seat defeating Beth Nolte while Vernon Pakson lost to Peter Ryken in the recorder race. H R Gross led Republicans for Congress. Harold Hughes won the governor’s ticket locally. Local totals show turnout around 2,350 with strong candidate support across parties.

Teal Permits In The Mail Experimental Iowa Season

Accidents Reported Over Holiday Weekend in Franklin County

Two accidents occurred on county roads during the Labor Day weekend in Franklin County. One involved a single vehicle with injuries to 17 year old Richard Bruce Siskow from the Thornton area after losing control on a brick top road and overturning into a ditch. He was hospitalized at Mercy Hospital in Magon City with multiple broken ribs and injuries.

Geneva Adds New Telephone Numbers and automatic dialing

At 11 45 p m Saturday September 10 Geneva telephones will switch to new numbers and a special directory with dialing instructions will be mailed to customers. A Hampton service upgrade will automate call recording and speed up long distance dialing, reducing seconds per call.

The 1964 U S agricultural census shows Franklin County land plus buildings averaging 343 90 per acre, above Iowa’s 273 36 statewide average. Franklin ranks 21st in land value and 18th in commodities sold per farm at 21 758. Tenant operation 40 9 percent, farm size 219 8 acres. Tenancy has declined since 1935 peak 50 percent.
