Christmas Baby Born In Seventh Ward Hospital
Nadine and Ellery Raiford of Ponchatoula welcomed Agnes Rosalee Raiford by C section at 3 27 p m on Christmas Day weighing six pounds fourteen ounces. Agnes is the first Christmas baby at Seventh Ward General Hospital that year. The Raifords have two other children Keisha Marie and Darlene. The mother called Agnes the best Christmas gift and Ellery expressed immense pride. The hospital did not release the parents names.

Speech tourney set at LLU by Southeastern Louisiana University
The Department of Speech and Theatre at Southeastern Louisiana University will host a debate and speech tournament during the 1978 Spring Semester from February 8 to 10. Dr. Woodard announced plans inviting area residents, especially high school teachers and students, to attend as observers. He also plans Southeastern's annual high school speech and debate tournament scheduled for March 31, 1978.

Louisiana considers teacher certification reform standards
Eric Pittman described movement toward evaluating teacher competency and possible recertification requirements. The task force will review current certification, propose recommendations to National School Boards directors in late January, with reports to be shared at Anaheim in April. Louisiana, lacking reciprocal certification, faces state evaluation of out-of-state records, though that topic won’t be discussed by the task force. Pittman will attend the 1978 AASA convention as a panelist on board member advisory relationships in Atlanta.

Two Men Arrested In Holiday Inn Theft Case
Hammond police arrested Gary Starkey and Francis LaBranche on charges of theft over 200 dollars after a van was found with dishes and housewares at a motel lot. The two were detained in LaPlace and later transferred to Tangipahoa Parish jail with bond not set.
