Major quake devastates Ferndale Northern California

A 6.9 magnitude offshore earthquake centered near Petrolia rattled Northern California injuring many and causing fires. Ferndale suffered the worst damage with brick facades collapsing and Victorian homes toppled while Petrolia saw buildings burn. downtown Ferndale was declared a disaster area as gas grills and storefronts were wrecked. The quake struck at 11 06 a m disrupting weekend festival activities.

Pleasant Independence Italian Festival draws sunny crowd

Independent crowds enjoy blue skies at the Independence Italian Festival held at Mater Dolorosa Catholic School grounds. Programs run from noon to 6 pm featuring Debbie's Acrobatics, Floyd Brown band, and Marie Rogers dance. The Mississippi Delta Shows operate midway rides and games, while the Cucchiara Center hosts arts and crafts. Historical artifacts are on display in the Cultural Museum and an antique car show overlooks the west side.

Fugitive Washington held in Tangipahoa jail after high-speed chase

Richard A. Washington, 26, of New Orleans, remained jailed in Tangipahoa Parish on 500000 bail after a pursuit across southeastern Louisiana. The pursuit involved more than a dozen units and included eight roadblocks before he was stopped near Hammond Municipal Airport. Washington faces kidnapping, aggravated assault, and armed robbery charges in Pike County Mississippi, and was booked in Louisiana on multiple violations.

Hammond attorney named brigadier general in Air Force

Kenneth L. Ross of Hammond becomes the area's first federally recognized active duty general. As brigadier general he commands the Louisiana Air National Guard unit at Jackson Barracks New Orleans and serves as adviser to the adjutant general on ANG matters. He is senior partner at Seale Macaluso Ross and vice president of Ross Wallace Paper Co.

Louisiana guard promotes first general from area since WWII

Research by retired District Court Judge Leon Ford shows only three other local figures have reached general or equivalent ranks beyond Kenneth L. Ross of the Louisiana Air National Guard. The three are Gen Glenne M. Jones, Maj Gen George S Junior Bowman, and Admiral Phil Dunn. Dunn retired here. Jones retired here from the Army Air Corps after attending Southeastern Louisiana University and receiving civilian pilot training locally before WWII. Bowman grew up in Ponchatoula, attended Hammond High School, and retired from the U S Marine Air Corps living in Baton Rouge.
