Protesters pray Elian will remain in Miami

Demonstrators gathered outside Elian Gonzalez home in Miami praying and chanting as the custody dispute stretches on. More than 250 people waved flags and urged Elian’s father to return to Cuba without his son while the federal appeals court in Atlanta considers a temporary injunction blocking Elian from leaving the country. The Justice Department paused reunification plans for a few days and pressed the appeals court to override the injunction. Lazaro Gonzalez had lost custody after defying a government order to take Elian to the airport. Juan Miguel Gonzalez has waited in Washington since April 6. A Newsweek poll shows a majority think the family isn’t cooperating with government and court efforts and disapprove of the Clinton administration’s handling.
