The Daily Star Item reports a breakdown of its Justewriter machine. Editors switch to a creaky old typewriter to publish the page showing off difference in type size and spacing. Time is tight in the newsroom, so such breakdowns are inconvenient but instructive.
A list of club and chapter meetings including ae Club at 7 p.m. at Cave engi and Fern Less Chapter 24 O.E.S at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Temple.
Last rites were held for Mrs. Marie Veg Volkers at St. Joseph Catholic Church Ponchatoula with Rev. V Wrobleski. She had lived in Wadesboro 17 years and died Saturday at Lallie Hospital Independence. Survived by son Warren Volkers of Wadesboro two sisters and three brothers. Burial followed in Wadesboro Cemetery. Thomas Funeral Service was in charge.
Services for Walter Levi Vining 23 were held Sunday at his sister's home in Ponchatoula. He died in a Livingston Parish logging accident when a dead tree fell while a load was being dragged. Survivors include his wife Evelyn and two children, plus his parents two sisters and five brothers. Interment followed at Ponchatoula Cemetery.
Mrs Willard Thomas president of the Baptist Tangipahoa Woman s Missionary Union announces a parish wide event at Line Creek Baptist Church near Kentwood at 10 a m Thursday. The theme Our Homeland for Our Savior. A luncheon will follow with speakers Mrs Charles Walker of Amite and Allegra Laprairie of New Orleans Sellers Baptist Home and Adoption Center on the program.
W F Wilson Jr, LSU Fruit and Truck Station superintendent, traveled to Port Arthur Texas for the Annual Camellia Show of the Port Arthur Men’s Camellia Club. His Pink seedling won the top prize and earned the American Camellia Society highly commended award, adding to previously introduced varieties.
The Hammond Fire Department fought a blaze at a portable skating rink at the Highways 190 and 51 intersection owned by John Nettles of Summit Mississippi. Chief Leonce Albin said minor injuries occurred evacuating guests and about 1000 dollars in tent loss plus 300 dollars for skater coats and shoes. Fire started from a portable heating unit and was controlled within minutes by twenty firefighters using three pieces of equipment.
Legion members and Auxiliary from Hamm Post 156 watched Communism on the Map, a National Education Program film produced at Harding College. Dr. Sidney J. Romero of Southeastern Louisiana College introduced the film and noted it is available for local groups. Members of Daughters of the American Revolution attended and refreshments followed.
Linda Bernard, 16, of Hammond struck and killed a cow owned by Percy Johnson on the Old Covington Highway last Wednesday night. She was driving a 1960 Buick with passengers Martha Sibley and Gladys Quire. no injuries reported.
M A Wolcott elected new head of the Louisiana Press Association succeeding Samuel D Beck Times. Awards announced over a three day convention with Houma Courier winning general excellence and sharing honors with Franklin Banner-Tribune in community service.
Funeral services were held for Victoria Allemand Miller in Holy Ghost Catholic Church Hammond. Miller longtime Hammond resident died aged 71 survivors include two sons Clai borne and Albert Allemand two daughters Edna Graves Annie Scharwarth two sisters Siodnia Navarre Envia Blanchard two brothers Adam Perke Dominique Perke five grandchildren six great grandchildren interment Greenlacs Cemetery Hammond. Thomas Rumaxal Home in charge.
Hammond firefighters battled a house fire at 400 Washington Avenue Saturday morning. The home, owned by L. W. Yokum and housing the Albert Wright family, is described with residents listed as Negro. Firemen Fitcie Burton and Paul Gaude were on the roof, with Robert Smith holding the ladder.
Amy offers Opportunity says youths in Louisiana can join the 6th Howitzer Battalion 17th Artillery to fulfill military service in six months of active duty. Men aged 18 1/2 to 26 may apply at the Unit Advisor office in the Douglas L Wilcombe Reserve Training Center or call 3179 for details.
Southeast Louisiana College alumni group met on campus to approve two 300 scholarships annually starting fall 1961 and a long range goal of 16 scholarships. The group also set May 2 as the annual alumni banquet date and approved four new four page publications yearly for college subjects.
Southeastern Louisiana College will close the first semester Saturday and begin second term classwork on January 30 after freshmen orientation and registration. Dean J. B. Woolgy announced that the college enjoyed its largest registration in history with 2139 students, surpassing the previous high of 1734. The incoming freshmen will arrive January 24-25 with registration slated for January 26.
