Upland House Restores Historic Oak River Home as Teahouse

Donna Brown and Diana Miller along with their husbands Dale and Gord revived the 1890 brick structure once part of the Upland District. The teahouse and bed and breakfast opened June 26, showcasing years of local history and community gatherings hosted by the McDonald and Powers families. The house sits one mile east of Oak River, two miles south and east.

Peppe's restaurant gutted in overnight fire

Firefighters battled two separate blazes in Hamiota on Sept 13 and 15. Peppe's Family Restaurant and Lounge suffered heavy damage on the main floor while the rest of the building remained largely intact. The origin was undetermined with smoking materials suspected. a second fire at Scott Cochrane's ground floor suite caused heavy damage and was ruled accidental with the extent pending.

NDP Reinstates Grade 12 Standardized Tests in Manitoba

The NDP plans to bring back grade 12 standardized tests in math and language arts this year, counting for 30 percent of final marks. The policy echoes a 1997 Conservative plan, with minister Drew Caldwell noting results won’t be published by school and no plans for other grades. Grade three tests were dropped in 1999 and replaced by diagnostic assessments.
