Federal minister threatens Wheat Board return for barley
In a CBC Radio interview on Aug 10, federal Agriculture Minister Charlie Mayer warned he could restore the Canadian Wheat Board as the sole marketer of domestic malting barley. He said breweries may be importing American barley to suppress prices, and that the change could be reversed quickly if breweries game the market. The Wheat Board says open borders could cost prairie farmers 12 to 15 million dollars on about 400,000 tonnes sold annually.
