Money market funds offer safety and liquidity for savers
Canadian investors show lagging use of money market funds vs the United States, though benefits are clear. Funds pool assets to buy short term securities like government T bills and commercial paper, with quick withdrawals and potential RRSP tax advantages. Investors can earn compounding interest and use regular income payouts, while some funds allow cheque access. As market conditions shift, many see money market funds as a temporary parking place before shifting to growth stocks. Mr. Mardon of Investors Group Inc. notes Canadians are gradually adopting this approach.
