Farmers oppose Pepin Crow Rate shift new rail costs
NFU regional coordinator Jack Skelton denounces Transport Minister Pepin's plan to shift Crow Rate funding to farmers and cut branch line subsidies by at least one hundred million dollars. He warns the change would depress producer grain values and push costs to farmers while railways gain power from a negotiable rate system.

Federal support for weaner pigs and grain beetle control guidance
The Federal Government will pay 1.00 per weaner pig sold between April 1 1979 and March 31 1980, with eligibility up to 5,000 pigs for 30 to 50 pound animals. Forms will be available soon through the Agricultural Stabilization Board in Ottawa. Manitoba farmers are advised to inspect grain storage biweekly for beetles, clean bins to prevent infestations, and follow a granary cleanup program. Spraying with malathion in water and proper fumigation or grain protectants are recommended, with caution for toxic agents. The Virden Agricultural office provides the Farm Facts guide on prevention and control.
