Governments to Co operate on Water Supply

Canada and Manitoba agreed to a cost shared program to provide water supplies to drought affected communities. Lloyd Axworthy and James Downey signed the pact covering development of water sources overland transport and emergency diversions. Projects may include wells pipelines and dugout pumping with PFRA federal support.

Guaranteed Loans Available to Manitoba Farmers

Manitoba farmers can access two MACC guaranteed loan programs during the drought. One backs long term loans up to 200000, secured by MACC, lowering interest and saving about 22505 on a 100000 loan at 1 percent for 25 years. Younger farmers under 40 may get a four percent rebate on the first 50000 for five years, potentially 10000. MACC also backs 10 percent of short term operating loans. Applications available at MACC offices and through banks.

Blue Cross to Carry Manitoba Civil Service Dental Plan

Blue Cross chosen to administer the government dental plan for civil servants and eligible Crown employees in Manitoba. The plan, effective November 1, uses a rebate system with a $25 annual family deductible and government reimbursements of 70 percent for basic and 50 percent for major dental care, up to $600 per covered person per year.

Functions Transferred to Government Services in Winnipeg

Premier Sterling Lyon announces consolidation of internal government services under the Department of Government Services. As of September 1, most Communications Division functions move from Consumer and Corporate Services and Environment, including the Queen's Printer Manitoba Gazette and Advertising Audit Office. Information Services Branch stays with Consumer and Corporate Affairs and Environment.

Winnipeg forms a joint committee including provincial Labor and Manpower, Canada Employment and Immigration, Southam Inc. and four unions to place former Tribune employees. Jurors Witnesses to Get Higher Fees

Manitoba Attorney General Gerry Mercier announced fee hikes for jurors witnesses and court interpreters effective October 1 1980. Jurors rise from 18 to 30 dollars per day plus hardship from 6 to 10. Witnesses increase from 4 to 10 per half day and professional witnesses from 5 to 50 per half day. Court interpreters fees go from 20 to 25 per half day.

July 1980 Electrical Generation Falls 24 Percent

July 1980 Manitoba electrical generation fell 24.1 percent from July 1979 due to drought, totaling 1233.2 million kWh with 94.6 percent from water power. Imported energy reached 65.8 million kWh, while total Manitoba generation and purchases were 1299.0 million kWh. Provincial consumption rose 0.4 percent from July 1979 and 12 month consumption declined 2.1 percent. Energy used locally was 69.5 percent of generation. surplus energy was sold out of province.

Lyon Cites Courage of Runner Terry Fox

Premier Lyon sent a telegram to Terry Fox praising his courage and dedication as a 22 year old cancer patient and amputee running across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. Manitobans followed his progress and offered support during his difficult period.
