Government and Pharmacists to Study Manitoba Drug Prices

The province and the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association will study retail drug prices in Manitoba. Health minister George Johnson cites rising costs and Medicare implications, with the MPA agreeing to cooperate and form a committee. The program will discount bulk drug sales by 15 percent to Medicare recipients, with government funding for drugs.

Port Arthur terminal expansion to add 4250000 bushels capacity

P A Terminal Limited Grain Growers Limited will add a three unit addition to its Port Arthur terminal, expanding capacity to 4,250,000 bushels. Carter Construction Company Limited of Toronto received the contract, with work to proceed at the out shore end and rapid completion expected by July 1961. Improved shipping facilities will allow the largest St Lawrence Seaway vessels to load without repositioning.

EB McLean announces S J Klym and J E Outhwaite appointed inspectors of schools for the Pelly Trail and Rolling River School Divisions. Duties include assessing buildings, pupil and teacher quality, and reporting to local boards and the department. Klym, a long-time teacher and principal, has studied at Dauphin and Manitoba, while Outhwaite, a Winnipeg system veteran, teaches and lectures in education at Landon College and the University of Manitoba.

New Manitoba Nuclear Station to Start Next Year

Atomic Energy of Canada plans construction of a Manitoba nuclear research station near Lac du Bonnet with a bridge across the Winnipeg River and a four mile road. By 1934 about 200 workers, rising to around 1000 by 1972, with $30 to $40 million spent over four to five years. The project links with the University of Manitoba, hires engineers in chemical and metallurgical fields, and will purchase land on both riverbanks to secure the site.

Hog Quality Premiums Increased by Canada Agriculture Minister

Minister Douglas Harkness announced after October 3 1960 hog quality premiums for Canada Grade A hogs rise to 3.00 dollars from the current 2.00 for Grade A and 1.00 for Grade B. The change aims to lift lean meat carcass yield and strengthen domestic and export pork markets. Only 30 percent of hog carcasses qualified as Grade A in early 1960, suggesting potential improvement from producers.

A Civil Board and Teachers Association committee met to outline graduation events in the Birdtail River Division. The celebration will be in the Hamiota School Auditorium on the evening of October 7. Eligibility requires Grade XII completion in 1960 with at least 75 in the subject, and a single student may win no more than two awards.

1915 Case Tractor on Duty at Gerry Bilton’s Farm

Threshing ends for the year as a 1913 Case Tractor powers the separator, followed by the old Steamer to finish. Gerry rebuilt the engine with Wally Castle and a new radiator, hoping for display at the summer fair but instead ready for fall work.
