Memory Cairn Honors First Local School History
More than 325 former teachers pupils and families gathered July 15 1979 at the White Bank Lea site to unveil a cairn marking the area’s first school founded in 1889 and closed in 1955. Frank McLachlin of Neepawa built the cairn with stones from the original Henry family Stone house. The Gourlay family holds the top stone’s meaning as a link to the past. The inscription reads Their faith was justified. Local organizers led by Homer Henry Fred Gourlay Doris Henry and Myrtle Crighton celebrated with broad district support and remarks by Dr John Cardale son of a founder heard from England.
