First Nation police service extends coverage to more reserves

The Dakota Ojibway Police Service will patrol two more reserves this fall and be renamed as the Manitoba First Nations Police. Currently serving Birdtail, Sioux Valley, Campawakpa and Roseau River, the force will add Dakota Tipi and Sandy Bay. Last month ten more recruits joined the 16 week Brandon Police Service training program, boosting total staffing to 25 under Deputy Chief Dave Scott who says the name change signals broader provincial involvement.

MTS plan proposes higher rural rates despite below cost service

The plan would raise rural residential bills by six dollars monthly after three years for customers paying 20.30 to 23.05, while Brandon and Winnipeg phone users at 24.20 and 25.00 per month would keep current rates. MTS argues rural rates are subsidized and that new entrants cannot compete. A CRTC spokesperson expects a spring decision and a public hearing is set in Ottawa on October 1.
