Craik pushes Manitoba role in cellulose to ethanol tech
Manitoba Energy Minister Don Craik told CANPAC '81 Winnipeg the province will lead Canada in cellulose to ethanol research and commercial production. He cited Mohawk Oil's Minnedosa gasohol plant, a 16 million gallon per year project using feed barley, and plans for further Manitoba ventures to derive alcohol from aspen and poplar. He urged policy changes on natural gas pricing and noted provincial tax exemptions aiding gasohol. Manitoba will host the Biomass Energy Institute and benefit from University of Manitoba research capabilities.

UNICEF and WHO push water aid to save children
In 1981 the Water Decade and International Year of Disabled Persons highlight steps to protect children from disease due to impure water and poor sanitation.
