Winnipeg cadet earns commendation for 27 hour search

Chief Petty Officer Kelli Ann Grant, 19, led a complex search near Comox British Columbia for two lost hikers in July 1984. She coordinated teams from HMCS Quadra CFB Comox and RCMP, relayed grid references and wearing details, and kept searchers informed through a 27 hour operation. The Canadian Forces Chief of the Defence Staff awarded the certificate of commendation, noting her leadership and professionalism. Grant, now 20, serves as Director of Music with the 49th Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Cornwall Winnipeg.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Celebration at CHUMAH Hall

CHUMAH Hall hosted a multi event Saturday October 12 with Doris and Bill Pollock marking fifty years of marriage. Tea served by Unit 5 ladies Myra Preston Nora McConnell Irene Beamish and Pearl Kidd. Linda Glowach kept the guest book. A family dinner followed for about forty relatives. wrist watches presented, Roy Pollock MD gave a toast. Lloyd Hazlewood performed. Bill also celebrated his eightieth birthday and Cliff and Wilma Joynt celebrated their twenty eighth anniversary with guests traveling from multiple towns including Mississauga Calgary Saskatoon Roblin Dauphin Brandon Winnipeg Oak Lake Rivers and Pilot Mound.

Move Clock Back One Hour October 27

Manitoba clocks revert to standard time on Sunday October 27 at 3 a.m. turning back to 2 a.m. under the Official Time Act of 1967. Uniform daylight saving time runs six months from the last Sunday in April.

Validation stickers for snowmobile plates announced

Manitoba will issue validation stickers for snowmobile registration plates starting October 1 1985. Highways and Transportation Minister John Plohman says the change saves about 35000 dollars in production costs over three years. Owners renewing after October 1 should keep 1982 to 1985 plates for sticker issuance. New registrants will receive plates and stickers.

Hamilton Collegiate Runner Places Second in Province

Angela Bray finished 2nd and Darcia McNaught 64th among 125 Grade 9 and 10 runners at Jackson Lake cross country meet. It marks the first top three provincial finish for a Hamilton Collegiate runner in this single-category Manitoba event over 3000 metres.

Smith Inducted into Manitoba Wall of Fame

WINNIPEG Dallas Smith was among forty four Manitoba hockey players inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Wall of Fame on October 13, 1985. Other honorees included Bob Clarke Joe Crozier Ted Green Ted Irvine Pete Langelle Ab McDonald Reg Leach Builders and Manitoba members already in the NHL Hall of Fame. The event honored Manitoba players and was sponsored by the Manitoba Hockey Players Foundation and the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association with ceremonies in the Blue Bombers Blue and Gold Room and at the Winnipeg Arena Southwest Corner.
