Old Age Security Payments Rise in October

Ottawa announces October 1980 increases for Old Age Security pension and supplements. The basic OAS rises to 196.83 while GIS for a single person increases to 197.60. married couples see higher totals with GIS and the maximum Spouse's Allowance rising to 349.19 and 698.38 for couples. The changes reflect quarterly cost of living adjustments and income-based considerations for spousal benefits.

Health Minister Bud Sherman welcomes the collaborative agreement between Alcohol and Drug Education Service and Alcoholism Foundation of Manitoba. Manitoba to End Daylight Saving Time on Oct 26

Manitoba clocks revert to standard time at 3 a.m. on Sunday October 26 under the Official Time Act of 1967. Uniform daylight saving time runs six months from the last Sunday in April to the last Saturday in October. At 3 a.m. clocks fall back to 2 a.m. across the province.

Charges Laid Against Winnipeg Pit Stop

Sedco Enterprises Limited trading as 10 Minut Pit Stop in Winnipeg faced a $250 fine plus costs for misleading advertising. The charge, heard October 15, 1980, covered a brochure mailed to 32,000 Winnipeg homes offering a $5 discount on a $24.95 car shine and a separate $5 coupon redeemable only with a lube oil and filter change. The judge ruled the ad misleading as the discount applied to a total minimum expenditure of $38.90, not the $24.95 item.

The Canada Safety Council offers Halloween safety guidance for 1980. It covers children wearing light coloured flame resistant costumes, avoiding tripping hazards, avoiding obstructed masks, using makes up, walking on one side of streets, carrying flashlights, travelling in small groups, adult supervision for young kids, curfews within neighborhoods, banning entry into strangers homes, and inspecting treats at home before consumption.
