Province Assumes 60 Percent Of 1960 School Costs
Manitoba moves to equalize secondary education across 43 divisions under a plan backed by Royal Commission recommendations. The province funds 60 percent of high school costs, teachers' salaries and buses, while divisions and local districts cover remaining amounts. By 1960, about 17 million in building projects were approved, with many already under way, and expected total 52 million for the year.

Hamiota Gospel Chapel October Meeting Highlights
The October meeting of the Hamiota Gospel Chapel was held on Thursday October 13 with Miss O Offrey as guest speaker. Mrs Baycroft read scripture and prayers were offered for missionaries. Correspondence from China and Kenya was discussed, and Offrey spoke on sending parcels and literature overseas. A Christmas box was sent to Kenya and a lunch was served by Mrs Bevcroft and Mrs Bert Gurr.

Golden 60th for Mr and Mrs Pedlow of Hamiota
Mr and Mrs T D Pedlow, longtime residents of Hamiota and district, celebrated their Golden Wedding on August 17 1960. Guests received a TV set from the family as friends visited through the afternoon and evening. Mrs RO Fraser and Mrs Neb Curll led the guest book duties from 2 to 5 pm, with Mrs John MacMillan assisting.

Pioneer Extella Andrew Laid To Rest In Hamiota
Mrs Extella Andrew widow of the late Joseph Andrew died October 2 in Brandon Nursing Home after a long illness at age 90 years 10 months. She was born in Belle River Ontario and moved to Miniota in 1882 later marrying Joseph Andrew in 1891 and living on a farm near Hamiota before moving to town in 1902. Funeral was held October 4 at Hamiota United Church with Rev Ralph Clerk officiating.

Margaret Sutherland widow of Alfred Laidlaw Sutherland
Margaret Sutherland died suddenly in Vancouver on Sunday September 25 1960 in her 82nd year. She leaves two daughters Jean Heffer Vancouver and Florence Rampton Prince George and four grandchildren. She was active in charity and community life and will be remembered fondly by friends.

United Church Choir Elects Officers at Annual Meeting
The Hamiota United Church Choir held its annual meeting on October 6. Nora Mathison was nominated president with Reg Hedley and Alice Russell backing. Ruth Gregory became Vice President with Jean Smith and Norma Sheardown supporting, Betty Oakden remaining secretary-treasurer. A Christmas Care Service is set for December 18. The group will explore exchanging a Sunday Service with another church in the near future.
