Manitoba Sets Interim Minimum Wage Rise to 1.35

Labour Minister A Russell Paulley announced a 10 cent interim increase to the Manitoba minimum wage to 1.35 an hour effective December 1. He cautioned this is not a satisfactory level and will last until the Minimum Wage Board submits its final report. Roy A Gallagher, board chair, signaled no objection to a reasonable interim rise pending the final findings.

Ceramics Club Organized in Hamiota

Hamiota formed the Ceramics Club on October 8 with 21 members. Mrs Bert Strange of Kenton will teach the course. She outlined various ceramics aspects and the class began with hand modelling using Red Clay. Future sessions will be in the Community Room.

Board of Trustees met at Shoal Lake with 12 members present and Ray Simms as sports coordinator. Motions included approving minutes, purchasing land from Birtle, funding Zone X program, approving financials and progress payments, awarding the James Jackson Scholarship, renting St. George's Hall for kindergarten, and adjournment after 12:30 a.m.

Manitoba plays a key role in a Salute to Canada event in St. Louis from October 6 to 18 hosted by Stix, Baer and Fuller. UCW Meeting in Cardale United Church

The UCW met at Cardale United Church on Tuesday evening with a Thanksgiving service led by several members. Fifteen members attended and a decision was made to collect again this year instead of a fowl supper, with a committee named to manage the collection.

After a long illness James H Butler died at As Siniboine Hospital Brandon on October 7. Born in Whittlesey England June 18 1901 he came to Canada with parents in 1906 to Ham iota where he lived until 1965. He was predeceased by parents and three brothers and leaves one brother and five sisters. Funeral at Anglican Church October 11 with interment in family lot. Hamiota W I met October 7 with a good turnout. Treasurer reported 27.96 on hand and plans to sell Manitoba Centennial spoons. Red Cross reports work ongoing with goal to complete by week’s end. Mrs Perlmuter spoke on Creative Workshop and arts programs for all ages.

Eyes for the Needy drive by Tele Pioneers in Hamiota

Throughout October Chapter No 50 Tele Pioneers sponsor an Eyes for the Needy collection of used eyeglasses lenses frames and cases. A drop box is at Jamieson’s Department Store in Hamiota with pickup calls to 764-2359 or 764-2746. The program is run across the United States and Canada by Tele-Pioneers and Lions clubs.
